Title: Online Discussion: The Future of CALL
Body: Online Fielded Discussion "THE FUTURE OF CALL" 31st January – 5th February IATEFL COMP-SIG TESOL CALL-IS “Where has Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL) been, where is it now and where is it going?” (Bax, 2002) The questions raised by Stephen Bax and other scholars are still very timely. Are we satisfied with the development that CALL has taken? How would we like CALL to develop in the future? Should specific areas be given priority in CALL-related research? The above questions are but a few among those which often puzzle our minds. What better time to discuss the future than at the beginning of a new year. Please join the IATEFL COMP-SIG and the TESOL CALL-IS in discussing thoughts, opinions, beliefs and hopes and aspirations for the future of CALL. This online discussion will take place on the electronic list of IATEFL COMP SIG and will be fielded by Stephen Bax (Canterbury Christ Church University College, UK). The discussion will take place from 31st January to 5th February. Food for thought is available at: http://www.iateflcompsig.org.uk/future.htm#thefutureofcall where Stephen Bax’s article “CALL-past, present and future” and Mark Warschauer’s and Deborah Healey’s article “Computers and Language Learning: An overview “are available. Make sure you join the IATEFL COMP-SIG list so as to take part in the discussion. You can join by sending a blank email to IATEFLComputerSig subscribe@yahoogroups.com Looking forward to “seeing” you there and “listening” to what you have to say! Title: Spanish Vocational Survey Online
Body: In preparing for my Spanish 3 and 4 students to talk about possible career choices, I found this Universidad Peruana de Ciencias Aplicadas site that gives a 30 question survey for them to fill out on line and shows the results in graph form with a good explanation including career possibilities for each person. It always gives the same questions and answer choices, but in different order each time. There are some people and vocabulary they will need to be familiar with before completing the test. My kids loved doing this and the automatic mixing of the questions encouraged individual work. They were excited about getting their responses and comparing them. http://www1.universia.net/CatalogaXXI/pub/ir.asp?IdURL=141324&IDC= 10010&IDP=ES&IDI=1 Blagg, D. Test de Orientacion Vocacional. Title: Authentic Online Listening Materials
Body: Editor's note: The following suggested English online listening resources were recently suggested on the TESL listserv. ----- This web site, http://www.uefap.co.uk/listen/listfram.htm, produced by the University of Hertfordshire UK for EAP, has a selection of lectures and speeches with interactive exercises. I don't think they are completely authentic as they tend to lack..er...um...fillers and, and, and repetitions, but I have used the site in the past with great success both in class and as a resource for my students' self-access study. Picot, A. On-line listenings for intermediate students? Teachers of English to speakers of other languages electronic list. TESL-L@CUNYVM.CUNY.EDU (9 Jan. 2005). ----- I don't know if you'll find anything you haven't already come across on my list http://cla.univ-fcomte.fr/english/sites/audio.htm Did you realise all politicians' speeches are in the public domain? And a lot of what's on government sites. At least, this is true for the US and Britain. Have you thought of just putting the exercise on your site and linking to a resource? That way you can use copyright protected material - and there's plenty of that on the Internet. Hanson, G. Re: On-line listenings for intermediate students? Teachers of English to speakers of other languages electronic list. TESL- L@CUNYVM.CUNY.EDU (9 Jan. 2005). ----- I've recommended "Living on Earth" radio reports in the past, and I'll recommend them again. You can download MP3's of each report. The subject matter of these reports is "timeless" and interesting to students; the length of the reports is from one and one-half minutes to twenty minutes; the texts of the reports are also available online; and they will let you distribute the reports on CDs to your students if you ask them (at least they did for me when I asked). The Living on Earth website is at http://loe.org Baack, E. On-line listenings for intermediate students? Teachers of English to speakers of other languages electronic list. TESL-L@CUNYVM.CUNY.EDU (9 Jan. 2005). ----- Todd Beuckens has put together an excellent site that has recorded conversations organized by level and theme in MP3 format. There are also exercises that relate to each conversation. You can find his site at http://www.elllo.org/ Jennette, J. Re: On-line listenings for intermediate students? Teachers of English to speakers of other languages electronic list. TESL- L@CUNYVM.CUNY.EDU (9 Jan. 2005). ----- I recommend (and have used and seen other teachers use) This American Life (http://www.thislife.org), hosted by NPR. No transcripts, and the programs actually reach up beyond the intermediate level quite regularly (they are authentic and ungraded, after all, and meant just to be fascinating radio). Hendricks, A.E.
