Body: The Southeast Asian Studies Summer Institute (SEASSI) Heritage Program at the University of Wisconsin at Madison has updated their Web site. Offered courses include Hmong, Khmer, Laos, and Vietnamese. Applications for fellowships for the June 13- August 5, 2005 are due February 11, and the general application deadline is April 1. Body: From: http://www.ciplnet.com/voicesoftheworld2004.html Voices of the World is an initiative of UNESCO’s Goodwill Ambassador for Languages Vigdís Finnbogadóttir, based on an original idea by Janus Billeskov Jansen. Voices of the World is endorsed by the UN and supported by the Danish Government. Voices of the World aims to build international popular awareness of the diversity of mankind by portraying the peoples of the world, giving face and voice to each culture and empowering every language to speak in order to strengthen our mutual belonging. From the outset the project consisted of two major elements: 1. Creation of an audio-visual Internet based interactive presentation of the world’s languages: the Language Exploratorium. 2. Production of a Worldwide TV-Event celebrating the world’s cultural and linguistic diversity to be broadcasted in connection with the 60th birthday of the United Nations Organisation, 24th of October 2005. ‘What could be a better way to pay homage to the United Nations on the occasion of its 60th anniversary than to stress the value of cultural and linguistic diversity of the peoples of the World. After all, by celebrating the diversity of human culture we only strengthen the dialogue among civilisations, an idea rooted in the fundamental United Nations values. Body: From: http://www.neallt.org/ The Northeast Association for Language Learning Technology (NEALLT) will hold its annual conference March 11-13, 2005 at the Foreign Language Technology Center, at the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT), in Rochester, New York. This year’s theme will be “The Language Resource Center: Trends and Visions" as we deal with the challenges of the changing roles of our centers. Since we are focusing on the future, we are fortunate to be able to meet in the very new Foreign Language Technology Center, at RIT, which is a state-of the-art facility. We welcome proposals for panels and presentations on all relevant topics, but particularly encourage presentations in one of the following categories: * Promoting language learning * Serving instructional and research objectives * Showcasing emerging technologies * Lab management Proposals should be for presentations/demonstrations of 30 minutes, panel discussions of 45 minutes to one hour, or pre-conference workshops of 3 hours. Body: The North East Texas Organization of Language Educators sponsor a language competition each April at Texas A & M University - Commerce Campus. This year's competition is April 26, 2005. The languages addressed are German, Spanish and French.
