TitleAuthentic Online Listening Materials
Body
Editor's note: The following suggested English online listening resources
were recently suggested on the TESL listserv.

-----

This web site, http://www.uefap.co.uk/listen/listfram.htm, produced by the
University of Hertfordshire UK for EAP, has a selection of lectures and
speeches with interactive exercises. I don't think they are completely authentic
as they tend to lack..er...um...fillers and, and, and repetitions, but I have used
the site in the past with great success both in class and as a resource for my
students' self-access study.

I don't know if you'll find anything you haven't already come across on my list

Did you realise all politicians' speeches are in the public domain? And a lot of
what's on government sites. At least, this is true for the US and Britain. Have
you thought of just putting the exercise on your site and linking to a resource?
That way you can use copyright protected material - and there's plenty of that
on the Internet.

I've recommended "Living on Earth" radio reports in the past, and I'll
recommend them again. You can download MP3's of each report. The
subject matter of these reports is "timeless" and interesting to students; the
length of the reports is from one and one-half minutes to twenty minutes; the
texts of the reports are also available online; and they will let you distribute
the reports on CDs to your students if you ask them (at least they did for me
when I asked). The Living on Earth website is at

Todd Beuckens has put together an excellent site that has recorded
conversations organized by level and theme in MP3 format. There are also
exercises that relate to each conversation. You can find his site at

I recommend (and have used and seen other teachers use) This American
Life (http://www.thislife.org), hosted by NPR. No transcripts, and the programs
actually reach up beyond the intermediate level quite regularly (they are
authentic and ungraded, after all, and meant just to be fascinating radio).
