Body: From: http://nflrc.hawaii.edu/prodev/si05p/ Designing Effective Foreign Language Placement Tests June 20 - July 1, 2005 University of Hawaii at Manoa, Honolulu, Hawaii Registration deadline: February 15 In this 2-week workshop, participants will gain a solid understanding of the fundamentals of creating sound language tests, with a particular emphasis on designing tests to facilitate placement decisions. In the morning sessions, participants will be introduced to various testing concepts in a clear and non threatening manner. No previous statistical or measurement knowledge is assumed. Discussions of “real world” issues and problems from the participants’ home institutions are welcomed. In the afternoon sessions, participants will get hands-on practice creating test items and analyzing test results. The use of commonly available computer programs (e.g. Excel) to facilitate test analysis will be highlighted. Participants are encouraged to bring data sets from their program’s placement tests to practice setting up, analyzing, and interpreting their data. Title: Online Workshop: Japanese for Non-native Teachers
Body: From: http://nflrc.hawaii.edu/prodev/si05j/ Japanese for Non-native Teachers August 8-19, 2005 This workshop serves as an online professional development opportunity for non-native-speaking teachers of Japanese language at the K-16 level. As part of our mission to serve the development and enhancement of Asian language and area studies in the United States, the University of Hawai‘i National Foreign Language Resource Center will offer a two-week intensive online language course in Japanese reading and writing especially for teachers who have learned Japanese as a foreign language. The intensive course, delivered entirely over the World Wide Web using a tested and proven pedagogic model employing authentic language texts, focuses on the development and maintenance of communicative language skills at the Advanced Low ACTFL proficiency level, with a strong emphasis on written communication meeting high standards of literacy. Pre-Application Deadline: February 7, 2005 The Early Reading First Program supports local efforts to enhance the oral language, cognitive, and early reading skills of preschool-age children, especially those from low-income families, through strategies, materials (including software), and professional development that are grounded in scientifically based reading research. ED is particularly interested in applications from preschools that operate full-time, full-year early childhood educational programs, and projects in which at least 75 percent of the children enrolled qualify to receive free or reduced-priced lunches. A competitive priority is given to first-time applicants under this program. Awards will range from $750,000 to $4.5 million in size, with an average size of $2.8 million. The Feb. 7 deadline is for pre-applications only, which are required; applicants who are invited to submit full applications based on the promise of their pre-applications will have until May 2 to do so. This opportunity will include adapting an existing literacy curriculum for use with a low-literacy adult ESOL population, as well as providing professional development and support to the teachers implementing the curriculum. The effectiveness of the selected curriculum in increasing the literacy skills of low-literacy adult ESL learners will be evaluated as part of the Explicit Literacy Impact Study being conducted for the National Center for Education Evaluation and Regional Assistance of the Institute of Education Sciences within the U.S. Department of Education.
