Title: A Strategic Approach to Pragmatics
Body:

The explicit use of strategies can be helpful for learners when focusing on interlanguage pragmatic development.

Objective: To apply a strategic approach to the development of second language pragmatic skills.

Resources: Strategic Approach to Pragmatics resource sheet

Procedure:

  1. Work as a class to brainstorm situations in which pragmatic knowledge is important. Some specific examples could include:
  • Apologizing for rear-ending a stranger's car
  • A greeting in a grocery store or market
  • Responding to a compliment
  1. Use the previous discussion to have learners select a function and complete the Strategic Approach to Pragmatics resource sheet.
  2. Have learners report their findings to the class to give all a general overview of what each group uncovered.

Title: UO Flagship Scholar Erik Thorbeck Receives Boren Scholarship by Mandy Gettler, CASLS Associate Director
Body:

The University of Oregon Chinese Flagship Program provides a sequence of language learning instruction designed to help students develop Superior-level proficiency. The Flagship Program emphasizes real-world linguistic and cultural skills so that graduates are prepared to use their Chinese language and culture skills in a professional environment.

This emphasis drew current Flagship student Erik Thorbeck, who will be a junior next academic year, to the program. "I knew that the only way Chinese could truly be advantageous to a professional career was if I was fluent in it," Erik says. In addition to his academic work in Chinese language and culture, Erik is double majoring in Chinese and Planning, Public Policy, and Management.

Erik recently received a Boren Scholarship to support his yearlong study abroad at Nanjing University next year. He will enroll in regular content courses, studying and learning alongside native-speaking peers.

"I'm looking forward to living on my own in a large Chinese metropolitan environment," says Erik. In addition to his academic coursework, Erik will also complete an internship with an organization located in China. "I'll have time to cultivate lasting friendships and really get to know Nanjing."

As a Boren Scholarship recipient, Erik will fulfill the service requirement for the scholarship upon graduating at the UO. He hopes to serve as a Foreign Service Officer for the State Department or work as an analyst for the Department of Defense. "I'm not exactly sure about a dream career, but I'd love to work somewhere where I can help grow the popularity of action sports like skateboarding, mountain biking, and skiing in China."

The Oregon Chinese Flagship Program is funded by The Language Flagship through the National Security Education Program.

Curriculum Development for Legal English Programs
By Halina Sierocka
Published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing

This book provides a systematic introduction to the issues involved in designing and implementing courses of English for Legal Purposes. Each chapter highlights a different aspect of the curriculum development process, including syllabus design, taking into account the special role of needs analysis, materials development, and the question of assessing and testing languages for special purposes. In addition, the book provides a brief outline of key concepts in the methodology of English for Specific Purposes, in the context of Legal English in particular. Factors such as the specificity of legal discourse, the roles of ESP teachers, subject-knowledge dilemma, cooperative teaching or language issues are taken into account. The book concludes with a model syllabus for a course of English for Legal Purposes developed by the author as the outcome of a three-year action research program conducted at the Faculty of Law at the University of Bialystok, Poland. The book is informative and reader-friendly, and will serve as a resource and reference book for anybody involved and interested in teaching or researching into English for Legal Purposes.

Title: Book: Current Research in Applied Linguistics
Body:

From http://www.cambridgescholars.com/current-research-in-applied-linguistics-6

Current Research in Applied Linguistics: Issues on Language and Cognition
Edited by Paula Rodríguez-Puente, Teresa Fanego, Evelyn Gandón-Chapela, Sara María Riveiro-Outeiral, and María Luisa Roca-Varela
Published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing

This volume offers a representative selection of the papers presented at the Third ELC International Postgraduate Conference on Language and Cognition (ELC3), held in Santiago de Compostela, 21–22 September 2012. The book is structured into four parts. Part I comprises syntactic studies on the auxiliary verb get in Indian English, the grammar of verbs capable of occurring with or without an object in Contemporary English, and isolated if-clauses. Part II includes two papers dealing with word formation patterns and with crosslinguistic influences on motion expression in English and Spanish. The studies in Part III discuss topics related to second language acquisition, such as the difficulties encountered by Spanish speakers in learning English pronunciation, verbal morphology production by Japanese learners of English, and the effects of elicitation on students’ production of English past tense forms. The papers in Part IV revolve around discourse analysis and psycholinguistics, addressing topics such as automatic sentiment detection, perspectival construal patterns in language and cognition, and the effect of emotional valence on disambiguation processes.
