Preparing Classroom Teachers to Succeed with Second Language Learners: Lessons from a Faculty Learning Community
Edited by Thomas Levine, Elizabeth Howard, and David Moss
Published by Taylor & Francis Group

This volume identifies resources, models, and specific practices for improving teacher preparation for work with second language learners. It shows how faculty positioned themselves to learn from resources, experts, preservice teachers, their own practice, and each other. The teacher education professionals leverage their experience to offer theoretical and practical insights regarding how other faculty could develop their own knowledge, improve their courses, and understand their influence on the preservice teachers they serve.

The book addresses challenges others are likely to experience while improving teacher preparation, including preservice teacher resistance, the challenge of adding to already-packed courses, the difficulty of recruiting and retaining busy faculty members, and the question of how to best frame the larger issues. The authors also address options for integrating the work of improving teacher preparation for linguistic diversity into a variety of different teacher education program designs. Finally, the book demonstrates a data-driven approach that makes this work consistent with many institutions’ mandate to produce research and to collect evidence supporting accreditation.

Title: Book: The Split IP Parameter in Second Language Learning
Body:

From http://www.cambridgescholars.com/the-split-ip-parameter-in-second-language-learning

The book addresses some important issues in second language acquisition research, such as access to Universal Grammar, the factors that account for success or failure in L2 learning, as well as parameter (re)setting, within the generative framework. The empirical data against which the research hypothesis is tested come from two main studies: a longitudinal one, involving beginner learners, and an experimental one, with elementary and advanced learners; all subjects are adults learning English in a formal instruction setting, with Romanian as L1. Starting from Chomsky’s (2005) account of first language acquisition in terms of three factors, namely genetic endowment, experience and non-linguistic principles, the first chapter of the book explores the question of whether the same three factors may be operating in second language learning. The rest of the book focuses on more specific research issues related to access to Universal Grammar and parameter (re)setting. Since L1 acquisition is defined mainly as the process of parameter setting on the basis of the input, parameter setting is expected to be at the core of L2 learning as well. However, in the literature, it has often been argued that one of the most important differences between L1 and L2 acquisition is related precisely to this process. The parameter which the book focuses on is the split IP parameter (Bobaljik and Thráinsson, 1998), in the case of Romanian L1 learners of English as L2.

Title: Book: Insight into EFL Teaching and Issues in Asia
Body:

From http://www.cambridgescholars.com/insight-into-efl-teaching-and-issues-in-asia-2

This collection offers insight into current issues in teaching English as a Foreign Language (EFL) in Asia. University and secondary school teachers and researchers from nine different countries share experiences they have encountered in their English-language courses, offering suggestions for incorporating new methodologies and techniques both in and outside the classroom. This book is unique in that it offers the perspective of teaching English in Asia, where students often don’t get many opportunities to engage with the language in informal settings. This book is geared towards university-level instructors and secondary school teachers teaching EFL in Asia, as well as researchers conducting cross-cultural studies which investigate foreign language learning and acquisition in today’s global society. Topics discussed in this volume include action research projects, successful teaching practices, innovative language assistance programs, and issues of autonomy and identity.

Title: 2015-16 Fulbright Scholar Program Competition Is Now Open
Body:

Beginning with the 2014-2015 competition, opportunities for scholars specializing in Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) and associated fields are being organized and showcased in an entirely new way by the Fulbright Scholar Program. Although grants will continue to be made to a specific country, all TEFL opportunities are now grouped under a single award number (#5000). By presenting the full range of TEFL within a worldwide context, potential applicants will be able to examine and compare more than 50 country options simultaneously. Applicants can indicate one or more countries from the list below in which they wish to be considered, identify a region (for example, “Sub-Saharan Africa” or “Spanish-speaking countries”), or leave their applications “open to any placement.” Letters of invitation are not required.

As many as 60 grants are anticipated. The award supports a priority for English language teacher training in any of over 30 areas of specialization. A Ph.D. is not required. Opportunities are open to a wide range of scholars and, in many countries, professionals as well.

You can read more about the Fulbright Global TEFL award at http://www.cies.org/teaching-english-foreign-language. The deadline to apply is August 1, 2014.

Title: Webinar: Learning in Two Languages in Early Childhood: What Every Early Childhood Professional Needs to Know
Body:

Last month, as part of the START KIDS BRIGHT Webinar Series (http://www.earlychildhoodwebinars.com/about/sponsor/united-way-center-for-excellence-in-early-education/), Dr. Mileidis Gort, Associate Professor at Ohio State University, hosted a webinar and addressed some of the myths about bilingualism stating “there is no scientific evidence that exposure to two or more languages causes language learning problems.” Dr. Gort also discussed the language development process of young bilinguals, or dual language learners, including different types of dual language learners and pathways to bilingualism, stages of dual language learning for simultaneous and sequential bilinguals, oral language acquisition strategies used by dual language learners, contextual and individual factors influencing the dual language development process, and typical and atypical markers of dual language development.
