Title: Just Add German Video Testimonials
Body:

In April we wrote about the Just Add German video challenge (http://caslsintercom.uoregon.edu/content/17597) in which middle and high school students are challenged to tell why they are passionate about learning German. That contest is still going through the end of the year, and meanwhile, you can see some of the testimonials that are already up at http://www.justaddgerman.org/testimonials-gallery. Videos are by celebrities as well as by students.

Title: Brief: Focus on American Indian English Language Learners
Body:

AMERICAN INDIAN STUDENTS WHO ARE ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNERS

Here is a brief from the WIDA Consortium about America Indian Students who are also English Language Learners (ELL)

Focus on American Indian English Language Learners May 2014

“Language is a huge part of your culture. It is really hard to have one without the other” —David O’Connor, American Indian Studies Consultant, Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction (2013)

The purpose of this WIDA Bulletin is to help educators make connections and provide contexts to deepen an awareness of the complexity and diversity of American Indian students identified as ELLs. To help achieve this objective, several guiding principles are presented that emerged from an interview conducted with Dr. Bryan McKinley Jones Brayboy and American Indians Studies Consultant, David O'Connor. In addition to explanations of each guiding principal, a discussion tool is provided that can be used in your local context about how these guiding principles can impact your classroom and guide your instruction.

Title: Words in Motion Curriculum for Middle School English Language Learners
Body:

Words in Motion, a cognate-based academic vocabulary curriculum for the middle school grades, is available for free download on the Center for Applied Linguistics (CAL) website. Words in Motion was developed, piloted, and implemented as part of the grant EVoCA: Enhancing Vocabulary through Cognate Awareness, funded by the U.S. Department of Education, Institute of Education Sciences. The grant was co-directed by Dr. Igone Arteagoitia of the Center for Applied Linguistics and Dr. Elizabeth Howard of the University of Connecticut. There are three versions of the curriculum: monolingual English, cross-linguistic (primarily in English with explicit connections to Spanish) and bilingual (English/Spanish).

Here is the link to the curriculum: http://www.cal.org/vias/subproject4/wmc/index.html
