Title: Story Strips Activity for Recalling a Text
Body:
Teacher Martina Bex writes,
“It’s pretty easy to come up with many different ways to review portions of a story, but I’ve always had trouble thinking of unique activities that allow students to re-generate an entire text. Cynthia Hitz’s ‘Back At’cha’ works well for this, as does creating a Class Storybook. These activities are great, because they allow the teacher to lead the class through a complete re-tell of the story without simply asking the class, ‘What happens next?’ ‘And then?’ ‘And then?’ Another activity that works pretty well is what I’ll call ‘Story Strips.’ Use this activity after you have finished asking a class story or reading a story-based text (ex: a novel, short story, or chapter of a novel). It is a good way to generate a complete version of the text in writing and remind students of everything that happened.”

Teaching and Learning English in the Arabic-Speaking World
Edited by Kathleen M. Bailey and Ryan M. Damerow
Published by Routledge Taylor & Francis Group
An important contribution to the emerging body of research-based knowledge about teaching English to native speakers of Arabic, this volume presents empirical studies carried out in Egypt, Lebanon, Oman, Palestine, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE)—a region which has gained notable attention in the past few decades. Each chapter addresses an issue of current concern, and each includes implications for policy, practice, and future research. Nine chapter authors are Sheikh Nahayan Fellows—recipients of doctoral fellowships from The International Research Foundation for English Language Education (TIRF). This volume is the first in the Global Research on Teaching and Learning English Series, co-published by Routledge and TIRF.

Mandatory foreign language on horizon
by Mike James
June 5, 2014
Kentucky schools are moving steadily toward universal foreign language instruction, and the state board of education took the latest step Wednesday when it voted to proceed with a world language program review for high schools and to direct elementary and middle schools to begin planning for competency in languages and global competency.
All public schools within the next few years will be held accountable for teaching foreign languages and preparing them for global competency, which the Kentucky Department of Education defines as a combination of international awareness, appreciation of cultural diversity, proficiency in languages and competitive skills.

Title: Tongue Twisters in Arabic
Body:
From the NCLRC Arabic K-12 Bulletin:
Virginia Vassar Aggrey (Saint Anselm's Abbey School, Washington, DC) suggests:
"I've been working on a google doc of tongue twisters in Arabic. I love finding and using tongue twisters with my students to practice reading, pronunciation, and distinguishing between various challenging sounds in Arabic. Using this link, anyone can view the doc, make a copy or download it to edit and use themselves, and comment to improve it for the future. I would love for others to collaborate on this project."
