Title: Call for Papers, 10th International Conference on the History of the Language Sciences, deadline 1 Oct. 2004
Body: The 10th International Conference on the History of the Language Sciences will take place at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Sept. 1-5, 2005. This conference takes place every three years, and this is the first time it has been held in the US since 1993. The history of descriptions of indigenous languages of the Americas has always been an important part of this conference. This year there will be special sessions on "missionary linguistics", organized by Otto Zwartjes (otto.zwartjes@kri.uio.no) but the organizing committee would also be happy to entertain independent proposals. Papers on all aspects of the history of the language sciences are invited. Please submit abstracts of no more than 300 words to the conference organizer (address provided below). If a full panel on a particular topic is proposed, the organizer(s) should provide full abstracts for each paper. We particularly encourage participation by scholars of non-Western linguistic traditions. The deadline for receipt of abstracts is October 1, 2004. For further information, contact the conference organizer: Douglas Kibbee Department of French University of Illinois 707 South Mathews Avenue Urbana IL 61801 USA (dkibbee@uiuc.edu)

Title: Collaboration Opportunity
Body: I am writing on behalf of Dr. Sylvie Roy from the University of Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Dr. Roy is an associate professor at the Faculty of Education where she trains new teachers (like myself) for the French route. She is also the Associate Director at the Language research Centre, Faculty of Humanities. Dr. Roy is currently putting together an international team of ten second language instructors to discuss methods and materials used in the teaching and the learning processes of a second language and its culture. Dr. Roy is primarily looking for instructors with experience in English as a Second Language, French as a Second Language and Spanish as a Second Language as they are most related to our situation in Canada although other languages are welcome. Following a group discussion, Dr. Roy would like the group to work together for possible research or collaborative teaching. If you are interested or know of someone who may be interested to join the group, please let me know or forward this message to them. We would appreciate your participation as it would be an excellent opportunity to share and discuss second language teaching methodologies from around the world. Sincerely, Jean Arscott Research Assistant for Dr. Sylvie Roy, Calgary Canada e-mail: ajarscot@ucalgary.ca Arscott, J. (26 Apr. 2004). participants wanted for collaborative second language research project. Foreign Language Teaching Forum listserv. FLTEACH@LISTSERV.BUFFALO.EDU (30 Apr. 2004).

Title: Website:LanguageGuide.org
Body: With vocabulary guides from 11 different languages, this is worth a visit! From: http://www.languageguide.org/eng/welcome.html LanguageGuide.org is a collaborative project and a publicly supported site. Its survival and continued development depend on volunteers and donations! Vocabulary Guides Learning the thousands of words needed to be comfortable in a language is a great challenge. The vocabulary guides are in essence virtual worlds. Users visit different parts of this world (i.e. insects, the family, the farm). They can then place their cursor over any of the images and hear their names pronounced and see them spelled out. In some pages, a notepad is displayed next to the title. Placing the cursor over this notepad will reveal a list of supplementary vocabulary .
