Title: Are Europe's tests being built on an 'unsafe' framework?
Body: From: http://education.guardian.co.uk/tefl/story/0,5500,1170569,00.html Thursday March 18, 2004 A system intended to ease comparison of language skills is failing learners, argues Glenn Fulcher. Introduction: The Common European Framework of Reference: Learning, Teaching, Assessment (CEF) was published in 2001, and is rapidly becoming the standard reference for teaching and testing languages in Europe. But there are very real dangers associated with embedding frameworks into our educational institutions uncritically. Glenn Fulcher is head of the Centre for Applied Language Studies, University of Dundee, Scotland

Title: Winter volume of CALICO Review- 5 new productreviews
Body: From: LLTI Listserv CALICO Review: http://calico.org/CALICO_Review/index.htm It is with pleasure that we announce the publication of the Winter volume of the CALICO Review. There are five evaluations in the present issue, all accessible of course from the CALICO Review website: http://calico.org/CALICO_Review/index.htm The first review, of Personal Communicator, breaks new ground for CALICO in the area of American Sign Language. The assessment of the Q Enhancement Series adds another review of ESL for young learners. Those of you who are familiar with the Ni Hao series for Chinese will certainly be interested in seeing how the accompanying software program has fared. Lastly, French instructors in search of materials for both beginning and more advanced students should find the evaluation of French Bit by Bit-Le Passe and Lectures d'appoint of interest. As ever, special thanks go out to the CALICO reviewers without whose dedication and expertise these evaluations would not be possible. Likewise, we gratefully acknowledge the collaboration of the software producers in the CALICO review process. We welcome colleagues to join the ranks of the CALICO reviewers, which is easily done by completing the Reviewers' Register form accessible from the bottom of the page at the URL indicated above. Enjoy!

Title: Online Article:The High School Transcript Study: A Decade of Change in Curricula and Achievement, 1990-2000
Body: From: http://nces.ed.gov/pubsearch/pubsinfo.asp?pubid=2004455 Description: This report presents findings from the 2000 High School Transcript Study (HSTS 2000) and examines the trends and changes in high school curriculum and student coursetaking patterns for the past decade. This publication allows policymakers, researchers, education agencies, and the public to examine the current status of the curricula being offered in public and non-public high schools. The HSTS 2000 collected 20,931 transcripts of students graduating from 277 American high schools. Results from the HSTS 2000 are presented with respect to earned course credits, grade point average, and education achievement, as measured by the National Assessment of Educational Progress 2000 Mathematics and Science assessments. In addition, results are compared across the four High School Transcript Studies between 1990 and 2000 (HSTS 1990, HSTS 1994, HSTS 1998, and HSTS 2000). Findings are presented throughout the report by selected student and school characteristics, including student gender, student race/ethnicity, school type (public vs. nonpublic), and region of the country.
