Title: 2004 Annual Conference: Family Literacy and English Learners
Body: From: http://www.lmri.ucsb.edu/profdev/2/lmri_conferences/04_conf/ 04confannounce.html The 2004 UC LMRI Annual Conference will focus on Family Literacy and English learners. With the growth of state and federal accountability, including the Federal No Child Left Behind Act, the need to improve the academic achievement of English learners has never been greater. One strategy for improving the reading development of English learners is to promote family literacy activities, such as the frequency and quality of shared storytelling and reading books. This year's conference hopes to address such topics as: · What family literacy activities promote early literacy among English learners? · How can family literacy activities best compliment the literacy activities in school? · What is the impact of early literacy on academic achievement among English learners? · What interventions are most effective in developing literacy activities in the families of English learners? · What can schools and teachers do to facilitate the development of family literacy programs?

Title: America's Relationship with the World: How Can Languages Help
Body: From: FLTEACH Dr. Ruth J. Simmons, President of Brown University, great-great-granddaughter of slaves, 12th child of share-croppers, raised in Grapeland, Texas, a student of both Spanish and French, has written an important message on the reasons for studying a foreign language: "America's Relationship with the World: How Can Languages Help," The French Review 77, no. 4 (March 2004): 682-87. I found this a compelling argument, and though it convinces from practical reasons, it steps away from the purely pragmatic-materialistic spin some of us (myself included) have been giving to our argument.
