Because this course is offered as a part of the Japanese School, participants will have opportunities to observe language courses during the session. Please Note: For the summer 2011 session, the dates of the three-week technology course have been scheduled so that students will be able to participate in Rakugo Week and attend a presentation by Shigeko Sasamori, a hibakusha (atomic-bomb survivor) of Hiroshima. ****************************************************************** Full scholarships available for intensive Japanese language study at the Middlebury summer Language Schools We are pleased to announce the continuation of the Kathryn Davis Fellowships for Peace for the fifth year in a row. Not unlike the Christmas markets in Germany, each of its American cousins has a flair that is unique to the city or region where it takes place. See a list of some markets in the United States at http://www.germany.info/Vertretung/usa/en/07__Culture__Lifestyle__Travel/06/09__Advent__Christmas/Markets__in__America.html For a taste of an authentic German market, visit the Nuremberg’s Christkindlesmarkt website, available in several languages: http://www.christkindlesmarkt.de

Title: Survey of Teachers in Heritage Language Programs
Body: From the National Heritage Language Resource Center (NHLRC), UCLA ***** Dear friends and colleagues: The National Heritage Language Resource Center (NHLRC) at UCLA is conducting a study of heritage language programs at the post-secondary level. This study will yield information on useful practices, valuable resources, and critical needs in heritage language teaching across different languages and institutions of higher learning. We are hoping you will help us by completing a very short survey (between 7-10 minutes) about the program you teach in. If you are interested in receiving further information regarding this study or in networking with colleagues who teach the same language as you, please be sure to check "yes" at the end of the survey. Upon completing the survey, we will send you an email acknowledging your participation. To access the survey go to http://ucla.in/dasQwR OR http://apply.international.ucla.edu/public/viewform.aspx?appid=257 If you are unable to give us this information, we would appreciate it if you would forward this message to a colleague who can help. Please cc us in your email, so that we can contact your colleague, as needed. We thank you in advance for your time and effort. Please contact Maria Carreira at carreira at csulb dot edu if you have any questions or need special assistance. Sincerely, Olga Kagan, Director, NHLRC Maria Carreira, Co-Director Language Teaching, NHLRC

Title: Book: The Mental Lexicon and Vocabulary Learning
Body: The Mental Lexicon and Vocabulary Learning: Implications for the foreign language classroom by Saskia Kersten Publisher: Narr Francke Attempto Verlag GmbH + Co. KG Summary: Lexis was, for a long time, paid scant attention to in foreign language teaching. Over the last 20 years, however, vocabulary acquisition has become a focus of academic research. In particular, the Cognitive Linguistic perspective on foreign language learning offers a rich theoretical framework for research in this area, since it encapsulates both ease of learning and a more profound knowledge of the target language. Learning vocabulary in school contexts, however, is still strongly associated with rote learning in many parts of the world, that is, the repetition of items, usually using lists with little or no contextual information. The implications of Cognitive Linguistics form the basis of an intervention study carried out in German primary schools. This investigates whether lessons enabling learners to elaborate on words and thereby process the vocabulary more deeply lead to better long-term retention of these items. The results of this empirical study are used to evaluate the relevance and benefits of the theoretical implications of vocabulary research for primary school learners of English. Title: Book: Corpus-Based Approaches to English Language Teaching
Body: From http://www.continuumbooks.com/books/detail.aspx?BookId=132867&SearchType=Basic Corpus-Based Approaches to English Language Teaching edited by Mari Carmen Campoy, Begona Belles-Fortuno, andMaria Lluisa Gea-Valor published by Continuum Description: Corpus-Based Approaches to ELT presents a compilation of research exploring different ways to apply corpus-based and corpus-informed approaches to English language teaching. Starting with an overview of research in the field of corpus linguistics and language teaching, various scenarios including academic and professional settings, as well as English as International Language, are described. Corpus-Based Approaches to ELT goes on to put forward several chapters focusing on error analysis using learner corpora and comparable native speaker corpora. Some of these chapters use translations and their original sources, while others compare the production of learners from different L1 in multilingual learner corpora. Also presented are new tools for corpus processing: a query program for parallel corpora, and the provision of tools to implement pedagogical annotation. The last section discuss the challenges and opportunities that multilayered and multimodal corpora may pose to corpus linguistic investigation. This book will be useful to those teaching in higher education and wishing to develop corpus-based approaches, as well as researchers in the field of English Language Teaching.
