Title: Sharqiyya: New E-Journal for Middle Eastern Studies
Body: From the Arabic-L listserv: The Middle East and Islamic Studies Association of Israel (MEISAI) and the Middle East and African History Department at Tel Aviv University are happy to launch a new E-Journal for Middle Eastern Studies, called Sharqiyya. We plan to publish the the E-Journal twice a year; the first issue can already be downloaded from the following link: Edited by graduate students and supervised by faculty, Sharqiyya is a somewhat different kind of publication, featuring 3-4 articles per issue (about 3,000 words each), plus sections on the Internet, cinema, satire, and poetics. In the words of the Editors: Sharqiyya is unique in that it draws on contributions by faculty, graduate students, and independent scholars, who all share a passion for Middle Eastern histories and cultures, and whose work is informed by first-hand knowledge of the region’s languages and sources. The Editorial Board invites contributors from around the world and the MENA region to offer us short articles in English for publication in Sharqiyya. All submissions must be sent to the Editors by email at sharqiya@post.tau.ac.il. Please feel free to comment or make suggestions in order to improve the journal. Title: Advanced Filipino Abroad Program
Body: From http://www.afaprogram.org/index.htm The Advanced Filipino Abroad (AFA) program is an intensive eight-week advanced Filipino languagetraining program held in Bulacan and Ateneo in Quezon City. It aims to fill a void in the academic community by providing 3rd year level students a one-of-a-kind opportunity to acquire the linguistic foundation necessary to engage in academic research, professional discourse, and cultural interaction with all segments of Philippine society. An important aspect of the program will be a four-week stay with Filipino families in Bulacan, a rural area. This helps immensely in enhancing cultural thrust of the Program. This coming summer, June 11 – August 6, 2011, the program will be at Bulacan State University (June 11 – July 10, 2011). This University is in the province of Bulacan considered the center of the best variety of Tagalog spoken in the country. It is also the seat of many important Philippine historical events. The second site will be at Ateneo De Manila University (July 11 – August 6, 2011). Ateneo, like De LaSalle is one of the very few top private universities in the country. Application deadline: Monday, February 7, 2011 Learn more about the program at http://www.afaprogram.org/program.htm
