Title: Seminar: Third Language (L3) Acquisition
Body: From http://www.uiowa.edu/obermann/L3 Summer 2010 Obermann Research Seminar Third Language (L3) Acquisition: Developing a research base June 7-11 This seminar will provide a forum of discussion for research on multilingual acquisition examining different domains of language acquisition and use, realized through distinct theoretical backgrounds and over a wide range of language pairings. The seminar will produce a collection of empirical papers to be published in the Studies in Bilingualism series of John Benjamins that are, despite coming from a range of traditionally non-intersecting perspectives, connected at the conceptual level by the seminar’s goal to build and develop a more parsimonious research base for multilingual acquisition. See the list of participants and presentations at http://www.uiowa.edu/obermann/L3

Body: From the Ohio Foreign Language Association listserv: Dear Ohio World Language Teachers, As you probably already know, the Ohio Department of Education world languages team has been tasked with revising Ohio’s Academic Content Standards for K-12 Foreign Language. This revision comes in response to Governor Ted Strickland’s Education Plan and Ohio Revised House Bill 1, which mandates the adoption of revised standards in our content area by the State Board of Education by no later than June, 2011. A revision of the foreign language model curriculum will follow. The purpose of this message is to cordially invite Ohio world language teachers to participate in a Teacher Discussion Group in Columbus on Wednesday, June 16, 2010. The meeting will focus on the revision of our content standards. Our goals for discussion group attendees are as follows: • Gain an understanding of the standards revision process; • Look at some proposed ideas for the revisions of the K-12 foreign language content standards; • Reflect on how the proposed changes might impact your teaching situation; • Provide feedback on the proposals to help guide the revision process; and • Have an opportunity to ask questions. The meeting will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the main library at Gahanna-Lincoln High School, which is located here in the Greater Columbus Metropolitan Area. The address is 140 S. Hamilton Road, Gahanna, OH 43230. Participants must register in order to attend this event. There is space to accommodate the first 60 teachers who register.
