Title: New in the NAEP Data Explorer: National Indian Education Study Data
Body: Data from the 2005 and 2007 National Indian Education Study (NIES) have now been added to the NAEP Data Explorer (NDE). Data for the 2009 NIES will be available when the 2009 report is released this summer. The NIES is a two-part study designed to describe the condition of education for American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) students in the United States. * Part I covers NAEP assessment results that provide in-depth information on the mathematics and reading performance of 4th- and 8th-grade AI/AN students. These data are presented either as overall totals or in the context of information from the NAEP student, teacher, and school questionnaires that are given to all participants in NAEP. * Part II presents results from the NIES Survey that provides information on AI/AN students' experience with their culture and language related to education. These data are collected with separate survey questionnaires for students, their teachers, and their school administrators. The NIES Survey is administered to all AI/AN students who participated in NAEP reading and mathematics assessments at grades 4 and 8. The survey is administered after the assessment. The NIES NDE works just like the NDE tools for the main NAEP and long-term trend datasets. A tutorial and Quick Reference Guide for the NDE can be found at http://nces.ed.gov/nationsreportcard/naepdata Start exploring NIES data at http://nces.ed.gov/nationsreportcard/niesdata For general information about NIES, click on the Help button and select the Help topic "Welcome to the NAEP Data Explorer." For more information on NIES, go to http://nces.ed.gov/nationsreportcard/nies NAEP is administered by the National Center for Education Statistics within the Institute of Education Sciences. NIES is conducted by the National Center for Education Statistics as a special study of NAEP.

Title: Using Photos to Teach Culture
Body: From http://www.nclrc.org Lesson Plan: Observe and Analyze: Photos and Culture By Ann Williams, Professor of French, Metropolitan State College of Denver The learning of culture can be seen as both horizontal (students learn about a variety of cultural categories) and vertical (students learn in-depth about some or all of these categories). The following activity serves to guide the students through both the horizontal and vertical learning processes. As they look at a photo of French cultural phenomena they are helped by their instructor to see first the concrete nature of culture and then to look beyond the surface to find the values and lifeways that give rise to what they see. Read a full description of the lesson at http://www.nclrc.org/cultureclub/teachers_lounge.html#photos_culture More NCLRC Culture Club resources are available at http://www.nclrc.org/cultureclub/index.html
