TitleTeacher Discussion Group: Revising Ohio’s Academic Content Standards for K-12 Foreign Language
Body
From the Ohio Foreign Language Association listserv:

Dear Ohio World Language Teachers,

As you probably already know, the Ohio Department of Education world languages team has been tasked with revising Ohio’s Academic Content Standards for K-12 Foreign Language. This revision comes in response to Governor Ted Strickland’s Education Plan and Ohio Revised House Bill 1, which mandates the adoption of revised standards in our content area by the State Board of Education by no later than June, 2011. A revision of the foreign language model curriculum will follow.

The purpose of this message is to cordially invite Ohio world language teachers to participate in a Teacher Discussion Group in Columbus on Wednesday, June 16, 2010. The meeting will focus on the revision of our content standards. Our goals for discussion group attendees are as follows:

• Gain an understanding of the standards revision process;
• Look at some proposed ideas for the revisions of the K-12 foreign language content standards;
• Reflect on how the proposed changes might impact your teaching situation;
• Provide feedback on the proposals to help guide the revision process; and
• Have an opportunity to ask questions.

The meeting will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the main library at Gahanna-Lincoln High School, which is located here in the Greater Columbus Metropolitan Area. The address is 140 S. Hamilton Road, Gahanna, OH 43230.

Participants must register in order to attend this event. There is space to accommodate the first 60 teachers who register. To register, send an e-mail to Teresa Cole here at the Ohio Department of Education ( teresa.cole@ode.state.oh.us ) with the following information:

1. Your complete name;
2. The name of the school district and/or school where you teach;
3. The language(s) that you teach;
4. The grade(s) or level(s) that you teach;
5. The number of years you have taught a world language; and
6. An e-mail address where you can be reached once school is out.

If you attempt to register after all 60 spaces have been filled, you will be alerted that your name has been placed on a waiting list.

IMPORTANT: If you register and secure one of the sixty spots and for some reason your plans change, and find that you will not be able to attend the meeting, please alert Teresa Cole so that she may invite the next person on the waiting list to take your place.

Please note that travel to this event is at the expense of the participants. ODE will not be providing any type of reimbursement for participants’ expenses related to attending this meeting.

This meeting is open to ALL world language teachers in Ohio, not just OFLA members. Please share this message widely with colleagues who are not OFLA members or who do not subscribe to the OFLA list serve.

Debbie and I look forward to sharing our vision for revising the standards and gathering your initial input, and we hope to see many of you in Gahanna on June 16th!

Cordially,
