Title: Idea for Practicing La Casa
Body: Here is an idea for practicing language about houses, especially for younger children, contributed by a Nandu listserv user: I do an activity (my kids call it a game) called Donde esta Maria? I give each student a diagram of a house (nothing special, just a pentagon divided into rooms that I call the casa). They each get a little person shaped marker (Maria). They work in pairs. They have to put Maria somewhere in their house and not let their partner see where she is. We have Spanish folders, so I have them set their folder up to block their house paper. One person begins asking questions, they have 3 tries to guess where their partner put Maria. They ask "Esta en..." and name a room in the house. They other person says, Si or No. If they get it right in 3 guesses they get a point, if not their partner gets the point. I start out playing with me hiding Maria on my paper and they have to guess as a class ( I call on 3 different guessers). I make a big deal about how I'm going to cream them at this game and then let them beat me (which they love). Once they get how to play the game, they can play in pairs or in threes if you have an uneven number of students. Buffa, S. Re: [nandu] Activites for teaching La Casa in SPanish?? Title: Project puts 1M books Online for Blind, Dyslexic
Body: From http://www.eschoolnews.com/2010/05/12/project-puts-1m-books-online-for-blind-dyslexic Even as audio versions of best sellers fill store shelves and new technology fuels the popularity of digitized books, the number of titles accessible to people who are blind or dyslexic is relatively small. A new service announced May 6 by the nonprofit Internet Archive in San Francisco is trying to change that. The group has hired hundreds of people to scan thousands of books into its “Open Library” digital database—more than doubling the titles available to people who aren’t able to read a hard copy. Brewster Kahle, the organization’s founder, says the project initially will make 1 million books available to the visually impaired, using money from foundations, libraries, corporations, and the government. He’s hoping a subsequent book drive will add even more titles to the collection. “We’ll offer current novels, educational books, anything. If somebody donates a book to the archive, we can digitize it and add it to the collection,” he said. The Internet Archive is scanning a variety of books in many languages, so they can be read by the software and devices blind people use to convert written pages into speech. The organization has 20 scanning centers in five countries, including one in the Library of Congress. “Publishers mostly concentrate on their newest, profitable books. We are working to get all books online,” Kahle said, adding that the organization does not run into copyright concerns because the law allows libraries to make books available to people with disabilities. Title: Book: Grammar Practice
Body: From http://www.prolinguaassociates.com/Grammar_Practice/index.html Grammar Practice: Photocopyable Worksheets for 212 Interactive Grammar Activities by Martin Jacobi Published by Pro Lingua Associates Each page is focused on a single point of English grammar, from very basic matters such as subject-verb agreement with "to be," to complexities such as real and unreal conditional and reported speech. There are three main types of exercises: * question and answer, * fill in the blank, and * pairwork. Many of the exercises are to be used in-class, but many may be assigned as homework. On each handout, there is minimal explanation of grammatical structures and rules because, as the title suggests, the point is practice. As a practice book, it offers page upon page of focused work on developing the fifth skill, "grammaring."
