Title: Lyrics Training: Improve Your Listening Skills

Choose a YouTube-hosted music video and select one of three mastery levels; Beginner, Intermediate, and Expert. As the video begins to play, the song's lyrics appear underneath with several words missing. Your job is to fill in the missing words as they're sung. If you get stumped, the video stops playing until you can come up with the word, but don't take too long because the app keeps track of the time it takes you to fill in the blanks. Click the "Give Up!" button to see the words that elude you. Lyrics Training sorts videos by fluency level or language. Currently the site offers videos in six languages (English, Spanish, French, Italian, German, and Dutch). The site is free to use and doesn't require registration, though if you do set up an account, you can save the results of your efforts. Title: Ideas for Teaching and Reinforcing Gender, Part 2
Body: Last week we shared several ideas for teaching and reinforcing gender from American Association of Teachers of German listserv users. Here are a few more of them: --- Each noun on 3x5 card in marker, gender and plural (written out, not just the code) on back in pencil. Each noun 3-5 times. I always split up the list and had kids each do five or so nouns three times each, helping them spell out the plural on the back. That way each kid had a shot at the first few. Kids sit in groups of three-four. one 'teacher' kid, two-three students. 'Teacher' flashes card to kid A. Kid gives gender. Right, kid keeps card. Wrong, card is shown to kid two. Right, kid keeps card, wrong, goes back in deck. Continue until 'teacher's' deck is gone. Kids count cards. Kids keep cards. Kid with largest pile moves on to next group as teacher. Kid takes his pile with him, collects the cards from the losing student in the new group and starts over. Repeat until someone makes it back to their original position. Warnings: must set up rotation. Must NOT let kids move until you say so. At some time during the game, one group will have a huge pile and another will have a very small pile. Choose a reasonable time and make all groups stop, count, and the winner of the two students moves on. Also, the kids tend to automatically give all their cards back and not take the new cards with them. Be very clear the first time you switch. If they've already reshuffled, just have them cut their deck more or less in half and the 'winner' take a pile. Takes 20-30 minutes for an average class. This works for plural, too, just not as well. American Association of Teachers of German listserv (AATG@LISTSERV.IUPUI.EDU, 23 Feb 2010). --- I teach elementary students, and details (like der/die/das, spelling, etc.) aren't their strong point, nor is sitting still. When we need a wiggle break, we sometimes do a quick der/die/das check. Everyone stands. I say a noun. der = squat to touch floor, das = stand normally, hands at sides, die = stretch arms into air. Normally, the students who have no clue self-correct by looking at the rest of the class. We just do it a few words at a time, so it takes 30-60 seconds. It isn't something I normally plan into a lesson, but if we need a stretch break anyway, why not use it to practice gender? Draheim, S. Re: [AATG-L] Gender Games. Title: Update to ANVILL--TCast
Body: The Yamada Language Center has just added some new A/V capabilities to their digital lab tool, ANVILL, a feature called TCast. TCast allows instructors to place multiple audio or video files in ANVILL (content types include: lessons, discussion forums, blogs, and simple course announcements. It's distinctive for how easy it makes the authoring and storing process of desktop audio/video (no offline compressing, uploading). Title: Alpheios Project: Software for Reading and Learning Languages
Body: From http://alpheios.net/content/about-alpheios The beta software release of the Alpheios Project is available. Alpheios makes software for reading and learning languages. In this release they support Latin and Ancient Greek texts. Support for Arabic and Chinese is currently under development and in the future they hope to support additional languages. The software is currently in Beta release, with all the caveats normally associated with that level of development. This software is intended for free distribution on the Web and its source code will be available under an open source license. Title: Teaching and Learning Languages in Virtual Worlds
Body: A new group has been set up by two leading language teachers' associations, EUROCALL (Europe) and (CALICO (USA), to promote teaching and learning foreign languages (including English as a foreign language) in virtual worlds: the EUROCALL/CALICO Joint Virtual Worlds Special Interest Group (VW SIG). It is clear that there is a growing interest in virtual worlds. There have been several presentations on virtual worlds in recent EUROCALL and CALICO conferences. Introductory workshops for newcomers to Second Life have also taken place at the annual conferences of both associations. In November 2007 EUROCALL began setting up a headquarters building on EduNation III Island, and in early 2009 CALICO established a presence on the land immediately next door. The two locations now form a significant joint environment linked by a teleport system.
