Title: Activity Idea: Videos and Scattergories
Body: An AATG listserv subscriber, Linda C. Havas, recently suggested the following activity to keep students engaged while they watch a video: Show the film and then have the kids write down all the words they recognize as they watch. Then, after you're done, have the kids read their lists aloud as if they were playing "Scattergories." The rest of the class will listen and if the student reading the list says a word that's on their own lists as well, they have to cross out that particular word on their own lists. The process continues until all students have shared their lists. The student with the most unique words left on their list is the winner. Link to Scattergories rules: http://scattergories.net/videos.html You could also vary it to take less time and have the kids work first individually, then in groups and then have the winners of each group go head-to-head. Title: Book: Russian Literature
Body: From http://www.polity.co.uk/book.asp?ref=9780745636856 Russian Literature By: Andrew Baruch Wachtel and Ilya Vinitsky Publisher: Polity Books Description: In this engaging book, Andrew Baruch Wachtel and Ilya Vinitsky provide a comprehensive, conceptually challenging history of Russian literature, including prose, poetry and drama. Each of the ten chapters deals with a bounded time period from medieval Rus' to the present. In a number of cases, chapters overlap chronologically, thereby allowing a given period to be seen in more than one context. To tell the story of each period, the authors provide an introductory essay touching on the highpoints of its development and then concentrate on one biography, one literary or cultural event, and one literary work, which serve as prisms through which the main outlines of a given period's development can be discerned. Although the focus is on literature, individual works, lives and events are placed in broad historical context as well as in the framework of parallel developments in Russian art and music. Title: Book: The Native Speaker Concept
Body: From http://www.degruyter.de/cont/fb/sk/detailEn.cfm?id=IS-9783110220940-1 The Native Speaker Concept: Ethnographic Investigations of Native Speaker Effects Edited by Neriko Musha Doerr Publisher: de Gruyter Summary: Despite recent works that challenge its empirical accuracy and theoretical utility, the notion of the "native speaker" is still prevalent today. The Native Speaker Concept shifts the analytical focus from the second language acquisition processes and teaching practices to daily interactions situated in wider sociocultural and political contexts marked by increased global movements of people and multilingual situations. Using an ethnographic approach, the volume critically elucidates the political nature of (not) claiming the "native speaker" status in daily life and the ways the ideology of "native speaker" intersects and articulates, supports, subverts, or complicates various relations of dominance and regimes of standardization.
