Title: Book: The Multiple Realities of Multilingualism
Body: From http://www.degruyter.de/cont/fb/sk/detailEn.cfm?id=IS-9783110224474-1 The Multiple Realities of Multilingualism: Personal Narratives and Researchers’ Perspectives Edited by Elka Todeva and Jasone Cenoz This book is the very first collection of first-person language learning narratives that offers rich introspective data on the various processes and forces shaping the development and maintenance of multiple languages (seven and more) in a single individual. The writers are twelve multilinguals who have been influenced by quite different contextual factors and who have learned a wide range and combination of dialects and languages from both similar and very different linguistic families. Also unique are two theoretical chapters which analyze the narrative data against the background of language development research findings within several thematic areas: multiple language learning as a complex dynamic system; the influence of bilingualism/multilingualism on the acquisition of additional languages; cross-linguistic influence; and also emotions, motivation, and identity. Title: Book: Principles and Practices of the Standards in College Foreign Language Education
Body: From http://tinyurl.com/yeb5xut AAUSC 2009: Principles and Practice Standards, College Foreign Language Edition, 1st Edition by Virginia M. Scott Publisher: Cengage Learning Overview Graduate students preparing for college-level teaching often encounter only superficial mention of the Standards of Foreign Language Learning in their methods courses and supervised teaching. Endorsed by the AAUSC, and published by Heinle, a part of Cengage Learning, PRINCIPLES AND PRACTICES OF THE STANDARDS focuses on the theoretical underpinnings and application of the Standards at the college level, particularly among language program coordinators, language and literature teachers, and graduate teaching assistants. PRINCIPLES AND PRACTICES OF THE STANDARDS, along with previous volumes, strives to further the AAUSC goals—improving second language instruction by developing language training programs, promoting research in second language acquisition, and establishing a forum for exchanging ideas, experiences, and materials among language programs. Title: Book: Language Diversity in the Classroom
Body: From http://www.multilingual-matters.com/display.asp?isb=9781847692252 Language Diversity in the Classroom Author: John Edwards Publisher: Multilingual Matters Summary: This book provides comprehensive coverage of language contact in classroom settings. A thorough analysis of the sources and implications of social disadvantage is presented first, since the nonstandard dialects that children bring with them to school - and the unfavorable perceptions of these dialects - have traditionally given rise to educational difficulties. The persistence of these perceptions is particularly highlighted. More general issues surrounding the range and implications of language attitudes are dealt with, as is the important test case of Black English. The book also discusses foreign-language teaching and learning, as well as the assumptions and intentions underpinning bilingual and multicultural education. Given its breadth and its style, this book should be of interest and value to all teachers, as well as to students and researchers concerned with any aspect of the social life of language. Title: Call for Papers: German Studies Association (GSA) Thirty-Fourth Annual Conference
Body: The German Studies Association (GSA) Thirty-Fourth Annual Conference Oakland, California, October 7-10, 2010 CFP: Re-evaluating DEFA Cinema In recent years, scholarship about East Germany’s film company DEFA has undergone a cultural turn. Barbara Eichinger, co-editor of the 2009 essay collection Film im Sozialismus – die DEFA, acknowledges a shift in GDR scholarship towards “transnationale und historiografische Perspektiven auf die kulturellen, soziologischen und politischen Gegebenheiten” (20). Among other conferences, the Fifth Biennial Summer Film Institute by the DEFA Film Library at the University of Massachusetts – Amherst in 2009 looked at new approaches of Rewriting (East) German Cinema: Issues in Film Methodology and Historiography. The organizers seek to continue these methodological discussions at the 2010 GSA convention in Oakland, CA, and invite abstracts of approximately 250 words for two interdisciplinary panels and a roundtable discussion under the overarching topic “Re-evaluating DEFA Cinema.” Panel I will combine papers addressing aspects of “Star Culture,” panel II centers around the topic “DEFA Dis/Continuities.” The topic for the roundtable discussion will be “DEFA’s Afterlife – and Why We Should Care.” Please send an abstract, indicating which panel you are submitting to, and a current CV to both organizers by January 31st. All presenters have to be GSA members at the time of submission. Benita Blessing, blessing@ohio.edu and Sebastian Heiduschke, sebastian.heiduschke@oregonstate.edu Heiduschke, S.
