Title: FU-BEST in Berlin Invites Student Applications
Body: Freie Universität Berlin invites applications for its undergraduate FU-BEST (Berlin European Studies) program for Fall 2010 and beyond. * Based on the U.S. academic calendar, FU-BEST offers a strong intensive German language program as well as an exciting menu of content courses taught mostly in English but also in part in German. * There is no language prerequisite for participation in this program, but all participants are obligated to enroll on-site in German language training at their particular level. * The content courses cover topics from a variety of disciplines, ranging from political science, history, philosophy, and sociology to music history, architecture, film studies, marketing/management, and art history. * Starting Fall 2010, two new courses will be added to the menu: “European Legal Traditions” and “Environmental Politics and Policy in Europe”. * The program has hosted participants from a wide range of mostly U.S. colleges and universities, featuring a growing number of formal institutional partnerships. Student feedback has been very positive. * Every semester features a week-long off-site excursion (in the case of Fall 2010, to France), as well as local field-trips and cultural events. * Participants are housed in homestays or single-occupancy apartments, but may also opt out of these choices if they set up their own housing sufficiently in advance of the program. The application deadline for participation in the Fall 2010 semester is May 1, and October 15 for the Spring 2011 semester. Title: UGA Summer Latin/Classics Institute & Summer Latin M.A. for teachers
Body: University of Georgia Summer Classics Institute Each year the Institute offers a variety of undergraduate and graduate Latin and Classics courses, including, in odd-numbered years, Intensive Beginning Greek and, in even-numbered years, Intensive Beginning Latin. The Institute curriculum is supplemented by workshops and guest lectures by visiting master teachers and other scholars. The program is designed especially for Latin teachers who wish to continue their education or earn a Master’s degree in Latin on a summers-only basis. Body: Avant Assessment, partnered with the Center for Applied Second Language Studies (CASLS) at the University of Oregon, is a world leader in web-based second-language assessment. Founded in 2001, Avant Assessment has established a strong presence in the field of online second language assessment. Avant is developing a proficiency assessment for students of Kazakh and of Western Punjabi. They have an ongoing need for native speakers of that language, who are also fluent in English, to help with the collection of authentic written or audio material to use in the development of this test. If you participate in one or more of these projects, you will work from your home on your own equipment. You will need access to the internet, preferably a high speed connection. The School of Language Studies consists of approximately 500 Language and Culture Instructors and supervisory-level personnel and provides training and testing services amounting to more than 1,000,000 student hours annually in 70 languages, to more than 40 agencies in addition to the Department of State. The Near East, Central & South Asian Languages Division (NEA) is responsible for the conducting of intensive language and cultural training programs. These vary in length and may be as much as 44 weeks at FSI in the U.S., followed by and additional 44 weeks at an overseas school for the most difficult languages. The length of training depends on the language proficiency requirements of the employees and family members of DoS and other government agencies who are assigned to embassies and consulates abroad. Title: Beloit College: Summer Teaching Positions in Russian
Body: Beloit College: Summer Teaching Positions in Russian Senior instructors and graduate teaching assistants are needed for Beloit College¹s summer intensive Russian language program (June 9 - August 6, 2010). In 2010, we expect to offer first- through fourth-year Russian. Each level, with maximum enrollments of twelve students, has one instructor and one graduate teaching assistant. Instructors collaborate with each other, the language coordinator, and the CLS director on curriculum, syllabi, and instruction. Duties include classroom teaching and evaluation, and assistance with organizing cultural activities for the program. Instructors will be expected to live on campus (single occupancy), share lunch and dinner with the students in the dining commons, and be available to students evenings and weekends. Minimum qualifications for senior instructors include an M.A., teaching experience preferably in an immersion environment, native or near-native proficiency in Russian, and advanced proficiency in English. An advanced degree in Russian, applied linguistics, or foreign language education is desirable. For graduate teaching assistants, an M.A. in progress is required. Salary is competitive, and includes room and board. Employment is contingent upon new employees providing documents verifying U.S. citizenship or, for non-citizens, documents verifying legal permission to work in the United States.
