Title: Article: Foreign Languages Fade in Class — Except Chinese
Body: From http://www.nytimes.com/2010/01/21/education/21chinese.html Foreign Languages Fade in Class — Except Chinese By SAM DILLON January 20, 2010 Thousands of public schools stopped teaching foreign languages in the last decade, according to a government-financed survey — dismal news for a nation that needs more linguists to conduct its global business and diplomacy. But another contrary trend has educators and policy makers abuzz: a rush by schools in all parts of America to offer instruction in Chinese. Some schools are paying for Chinese classes on their own, but hundreds are getting some help. The Chinese government is sending teachers from China to schools all over the world — and paying part of their salaries. At a time of tight budgets, many American schools are finding that offer too good to refuse. Read the full article at http://www.nytimes.com/2010/01/21/education/21chinese.html

Title: Students in Miami-Dade Embrace Foreign Language Education
Body: From http://www.miamiherald.com/488/story/1409634.html Students in Miami-Dade embrace foreign language education BY MICAELA HOOD January 7, 2010 On a recent afternoon, Mandarin Lakes K-8 Academy teacher Yun Yan Chen entered a classroom filled with 19 kindergarten students. Her students know how to recite common phrases in Mandarin, China's official and most-spoken language. The Mandarin program at the Homestead-based school, available for students in kindergarten, first and second grades, is one of 13 schools in Miami-Dade County that teach the Asian language to elementary, middle and high school students. Mandarin is not the only Asian language taught at local schools. At Palmetto High School, 79 high school students are learning how to read, write and speak Japanese. At Ada Merritt K-8 Center -- where more than half of the population is of Brazilian heritage -- 250 students are learning how to speak Portuguese. Title: District Pursues Biliteracy Seal Idea
Body: From http://www.modbee.com/local/story/1002778.html District pursues biliteracy seal idea Ceres school board to vote on measure By Michelle Hatfield January 11, 2010 Learning more than one language is hard and takes years to master. School officials here want to reward that time and effort with a "seal of biliteracy" for high school students who graduate with proficiency in more than one language. At its board meeting Thursday, Ceres Unified School District trustees are set to approve the seal, which would be affixed to diplomas and transcripts. The recognition is for students who learn a language in addition to English — Spanish or German — and for those who learned English as a second language. To prove mastery, Ceres students need to take four years of a foreign language and earn a B grade or better each year. They also need to pass the Advanced Placement exam.
