TitleActivity Idea: Videos and Scattergories
Body
An AATG listserv subscriber, Linda C. Havas, recently suggested the following activity to keep students engaged while they watch a video:

Show the film and then have the kids write down all the words they recognize as they watch. Then, after you're done, have the kids read their lists aloud as if they were playing "Scattergories." The rest of the class will listen and if the student reading the list says a word that's on their own lists as well, they have to cross out that particular word on their own lists. The process continues until all students have shared their lists. The student with the most unique words left on their list is the winner.

You could also vary it to take less time and have the kids work first individually, then in groups and then have the winners of each group go head-to-head.
