Title: Article: Sikhs Strive to Keep Punjabi Alive
Body: From http://www.fresnobee.com/local/story/1768283.html Sikhs strive to keep language alive By Jonah Owen Lamb January 3, 2010 The Sikh scriptures and the Punjabi language of many Sikhs were written in a script known as Gurmukhi. So to be fully initiated into the religion, you must know how to read it. That has created a problem for the Sikh community of Livingston. Their children, many of whom speak only English, aren't able to understand the temple's priests -- let alone some of their own family members. The problem, increasingly common in many Sikh communities, is threatening to create a cultural, linguistic and religious divide between generations, said several local Sikhs and the Sikh media. It's also a threat to the continuance of the religion among second- and third-generation Sikhs. But since April, because of the effort of a group of Sikhs in Livingston, 50 to 60 children have been taking weekly Punjabi classes. Title: Article: At Colleges, Humanities Job Outlook Gets Bleaker
Body: From http://www.nytimes.com/2009/12/18/education/18professor.html?_r=1 At Colleges, Humanities Job Outlook Gets Bleaker By TAMAR LEWIN December 17, 2009 With colleges and universities cutting back because of the recession, the job outlook for graduate students in language and literature is bleaker than ever before. According to the Modern Language Association’s forecast of job listings, released Thursday, faculty positions will decline 37 percent, the biggest drop since the group began tracking its job listings 35 years ago. The projection, based on a comparison between the number of jobs listed in October 2008 and October 2009, follows a 26 percent drop the previous year. Title: Article: Start-ups Aim to Help You Learn a Language without Breaking the Bank
Body: From http://www.boston.com/business/technology/articles/2009/12/20/start_ups_aim_to_help_you_learn_a_language_without_breaking_the_bank Start-ups aim to help you learn a language without breaking the bank By Scott Kirsner December 20, 2009 Along with losing 20 pounds, learning to parlare Italiano or sprechen Deutsch is apparently high on the list of New Year’s resolutions for many people. “Learning a language is kind of like getting a gym membership or a NordicTrack,’’ says Christopher O’Donnell, director of product management for Transparent Language Inc. “Jan. 1 is our biggest sales day of the year.’’ As with many businesses moving from the physical world to the virtual, there’s a cloud of confusion hovering over price: How much should it cost to become fluent in French? Berlitz charges $499 a year for its eBerlitz Fusion program, introduced last April, which includes online exercises and live group review sessions run by an instructor over the Web. Rosetta Stone, best known for its CD sets sold at mall kiosks and in airports, introduced TOTALe in July. It combines independent exercises, review sessions, and an online community of fellow learners: Unlimited access is $999 per year. But start-ups and companies such as Transparent, which has 75 employees, theorize that a much bigger market of language learners exists - if the price is right.
