Title: Article: Teaching Armenian, Sans Teacher
Body: From http://www.boston.com/news/education/k_12/articles/2009/12/27/watertown_high_continues_teaching_armenian_sans_traditional_teacher Teaching Armenian, sans teacher By Erica Noonan December 27, 2009 In a bid to save one of the last public school Armenian-language programs in the nation, Watertown officials are experimenting with a hybrid class for upper-level students. The program, nicknamed “ArMedia,’’ has replaced traditional foreign-language instruction for Watertown High School juniors and seniors with a curriculum that has the students compose online blogs and create multimedia projects about Armenian politics and culture, using the language whenever possible. The school district’s 40-year-old language program was nearly shut down this summer after its founder, Anahid Yacoubian, retired from teaching. Title: Chinese Webcasts
Body: From http://www.nclrc.org/webcasts/chinese/index.html The News in Simplified Chinese is posted to the web twice monthly and delivers a survey of the previous two weeks' news in Mandarin. NCLRC’s webcasts serve as a stepping stone between the teacher talk of the classroom and the "real" Chinese of the media. The news itself is taken from a number of Chinese-language sites, Sina, Nanfang Zhoumo, and others. The editorial "slant" is left unchanged and should not be taken to represent the views of the NCLRC. The accompanying exercises include pre-listening background information, vocabulary support, and post-listening activities. The exercises are written in the multiple-choice or fill-in formats. Listeners can check their answers with a mouse click. The news items, style, and exercise level are aimed at students with listening skills at ACTFL Intermediate-mid to Intermediate-high. In most cases, this corresponds to college Chinese at the end of second-year. Learn more and access the webcasts (and scripts) at http://www.nclrc.org/webcasts/chinese/index.html
