Title: Parents Choose Immersion Elementary Track
Body: From http://www.boston.com/news/local/articles/2009/10/04/holliston_school_offers_students_three_different_teaching_methods Three to choose A Holliston elementary school offers contrasting educational styles, giving students, parents a chance to buck the teach-to-MCAS temptation By Lisa Kocian October 4, 2009 When children enter kindergarten at Sam Placentino Elementary, their parents must choose among three programs: French immersion, Montessori, or traditional. Having two choices is unusual in Massachusetts public schools; Holliston’s three options may be unique. But there is a risk. The school district tells parents that if they choose a nontraditional program, they might see lower MCAS scores when their children are in the early grades, according to Superintendent Bradford Jackson. The majority of Placentino’s 704 students are in the traditional program, which emphasizes reading and writing in a familiar structure. But 133 receive their daily classroom instruction in French, while another 83 are enrolled in the Montessori program, which stresses hands-on learning and lets students go at their own pace. Both nontraditional programs have waiting lists this year. Title: The Importance and Benefits of Second Language Study
Body: From http://www.literacynews.com Fewer and fewer people in the English speaking world are currently looking at second language benefits as they have somehow become convinced that English alone will always be sufficient for their communication needs. This is obviously quite a sad state of affairs because the importance of learning a second language is just as high as it ever was. This article will briefly focus on the reasons for the importance of second language study. Title: New Jersey Approves First Publicly Funded Hebrew-Language School
Body: From http://www.nj.com/news/index.ssf/2009/09/mt-preview-88d6e00d3419f4d6a3189c7f8124c578deaefd95.html New Jersey approves first publicly funded Hebrew-language school By Karen Keller September 23, 2009 The state has approved New Jersey’s first publicly funded school with a mission of teaching Hebrew, according to a New Jersey Department of Education press release. Hatikvah International Academy Charter School of East Brunswick won the green light Wednesday along with seven other charter school proposals. Nineteen applications this year were rejected. The application submitted earlier this year ignited local controversy of the separation of church and state, especially among Jews. Two petitions circulated in the spring, with more than 100 area residents for or against, and signatures of Jews on both sides of the issue. Critics claimed the application was a thinly veiled substitute for a local private Jewish school in town that teaches religion and charges up to $13,000 a year in tuition. The founders, meanwhile, stressed that their school would steer clear of religion while teaching a vital 21st-century skill — a second language that would prepare students for the global economy. State law forbids publicly funded schools from teaching religion. Read the full article at http://www.nj.com/news/index.ssf/2009/09/mt-preview-88d6e00d3419f4d6a3189c7f8124c578deaefd95.html

Title: Article: Language As a Bridge and an Identity
Body: From http://www.latimes.com/news/local/la-me-tobar22-2009sep22,0,5869385.story Language as a bridge and an identity By Hector Tobar September 22, 2009 I was invited to speak on Sunday to a group of 5-, 6- and 7-year-olds, and to their odd, tiny "classmate" -- a stuffed bear. Like me, the children were all English speakers, born in the U.S. But the stuffed bear spoke only Spanish, the children's teacher told me. So the kids and I chatted in español -- just so el oso wouldn't feel left out. "Buenos días," I said to the children, and they all answered back "buenos días!" The bear kept quiet, however. The "Spanish-speaking bear" is a little trick they use at the Grupo Educa weekend language school to get the kids to speak Spanish. All the students there are members of Southern California families with roots in Latin America and Spain. Their bilingual parents are working zealously to keep the family Spanish alive -- despite the unstoppable daily wave of English that comes at them from television and films, and in classrooms and playgrounds. Title: Article: ICT’s and the Spread of Indigenous Knowledge
Body: From http://globalvoicesonline.org/2009/10/05/icts-and-the-spread-of-indigenous-knowledge ICTs and the spread of indigenous knowledge by John Liebhardt October 5, 2009 At first glance, the relationship between indigenous knowledge and the Internet seems fraught. Indigenous knowledge provides a distinct set of beliefs, practices and representations avidly tied to place; the internet lauds itself for erasing boundaries and borders. For all their perceived differences, the indigenous knowledge and global knowledge systems have become much closer in the past decade. Indigenous knowledge practitioners have begun leveraging different media to exchange ideas and publicize traditional learning to the larger world. One of the four grants, which are good for one to four years, was obtained in partnership with the Juneau School District. The "Wooch.een: Together We Can" grant applies specifically to the expansion of the Tlingit Culture, Language and Literacy program, or TCLL, implemented at Gastineau and Harborview Elementary schools. Goldbelt obtained three other grants as part of the $3.7 million package it announced: • A three-year grant from U.S. Department of Health and Human Service's Administration for Native Americans that will help expand language curriculum available to schools; • a four-year grant from the U.S. Department of Education's Office of Indian Education, and • a one-year youth activities grant from the city.
