Title: NCELA Webinar: Using CALL to Increase ELLs' Math and Science Literacy
Body: From http://www.ncela.gwu.edu/webinars/event/13 Date: Thursday, September 24, 2009 Time: 3:00 - 4:00 PM EST (12:00 pm Pacific Time) Description: Although English Language Learners (ELLs) need intensive and interactive English language development instruction, there is little guidance and only a few established strategies that help educators address the challenging literacy needs of the ELL student population. Well-known author and researcher Dr. Hakuta and his students at Stanford University have developed WordSift , a free, web-based vocabulary development tool that offers educators the ability to instantly capture and display the vocabulary structure of texts, helping them to create an interactive linguistic playground in which general and academic words can be tossed around and analyzed simultaneously. During this webinar, Dr. Hakuta will describe the development of WordSift and its implication for ELLs' literacy development and Mr. Roman will demonstrate how WordSift can be used for literacy development in science. There will be time for questions-and-answers. Registration Procedures: Go to https://barreraassociates.webex.com/barreraassociates/onstage/g.php?t=a&d=643385847 * Click on the "Register" button. * On the registration form, you will be prompted to enter your information and then click Submit. * You will receive a confirmation email with the password for the live event. Participants are strongly encouraged to submit questions prior to the webinar to facilitate comprehensive responses. These questions should be sent to Kathia Flemens at kflemens@gwu.edu by September 15, 2009. Participants may also submit questions during the event. This webinar will be archived on NCELA’s website. To view archived and upcoming webinars, please visit the NCELA webinar page at http://www.ncela.gwu.edu/webinars .
