Title: The Best Resources For Finding And Creating Virtual Field Trips
Body: From http://larryferlazzo.edublogs.org Virtual field trips are what the name implies — going on a field trip without actually leaving school grounds. These kind of trips come in four “sizes” — ones that you schedule in advance and have live interaction with someone on the other end; one that is pre-recorded and can be accessed at anytime; one that you create on your own; or one that students create after experiencing one as a model. Most, though not all, of the sites listed on “This Best… list” offer more than one of these options. Body: From http://www.c-s-p.org//Flyers/Studies-in-Applied-Linguistics-and-Language-Learning1-4438-1239-0.htm Studies in Applied Linguistics and Language Learning Editor: Ahmar Mahboob and Caroline Lipovsky Publisher: Cambridge Scholars Publishing Summary: Studies in Applied Linguistics and Language Learning brings together new and original studies in the area of critical applied linguistics, language policy and planning, and language learning and teaching. The book, divided into three sections, first offers critical views on various aspects of language in society, ranging from the construction of national identity, language and justice, racial and identity issues in the ELT industry, to language in business discourse. It then reports on language policy in the school curriculum, language learning in tertiary education, and Aboriginal languages policy. In the third section, it addresses issues in language learning and teaching, such as the role of parents in literacy learning, multiple script literacy, and language learning and maintenance strategies. Title: Book: Second Language Acquisition of Articles
Body: From http://www.benjamins.com/cgi-bin/t_bookview.cgi?bookid=LALD%2049 Second Language Acquisition of Articles: Empirical findings and theoretical implications Edited by María del Pilar García Mayo and Roger Hawkins John Benjamins Publishing Company Summary: The studies in this collection address a topic that has recently become the focus of considerable interest in second language acquisition (SLA) research: the acquisition of articles. Languages appear to vary in whether they have articles (English, German, Norwegian do, but Chinese, Japanese, Russian do not). Languages that have articles also appear to divide into those that realize definiteness (e.g. English) and those that realize specificity (e.g. Samoan). When speakers of one type of language learn an L2 of a different type, issues of central concern to SLA research arise: the nature of L1 influence, the time course of development, ultimate attainment, the relationship between performance and competence, and the role of Universal Grammar. These issues are considered in nine studies, written by researchers whose work is at the forefront of enquiry, that offer new data, new perspectives and new insights into the way L2 speakers acquire articles.
