More Empathy And Political Identification With Native Speakers August 11, 2009 The more empathy one has for another, the lighter the accent will be when speaking in a second language. This is the conclusion of a new study carried out at the University of Haifa by Dr. Raphiq Ibrahim and Dr. Mark Leikin of the Department of Learning Disabilities and Prof. Zohar Eviatar of the Department of Psychology at the University of Haifa. The study has been published in the International Journal of Bilingualism. "In addition to personal-affective factors, it has been found that the 'language ego' is also influenced by the sociopolitical position of the speaker towards the majority group," the researchers stated. Both were on hand to celebrate the publication and to present “Chickasaw: The W.B.L. (The World’s Best Language),” a lecture on the uniqueness of the Chickasaw language. Classroom tested for 14 years, “Let’s Speak Chickasaw” will now be the centerpiece of Chickasaw language courses. Prospects for the program, on the eve of its 40th anniversary, looked dim after the school could not find a replacement for its founder, Anahid Yacoubian, who retired from full-time work in 2007 but taught the advanced-level class to juniors and seniors until the end of school this spring. It appears the program at Watertown High is saved for this year but its future beyond that is uncertain.
