Fourteen local First Nations comprise the Nuu-chah-nulth family and their language is considered in danger of extinction as very few people speak it; about 80 elders, according to Nuu-chah-nulth Tribal Council Chief Cliff Atleo. UES principal Jennifer Auld said the pilot is the result of six years of work on an Integrated Resource Package (IRP) or curriculum that she has been codeveloping with another teacher in school district 84 (Gold River) and a linguist in Duncan. June 15, 2009 A group of Swahili scholars launched the new version with the permission of the California-based internet firm. Facebook use has spread over the past five years in East and Central Africa, where most Swahili-speakers live. Analysts say a Hausa version could be launched next in West Africa and Zulu for southern Africa. Facebook already exists in Afrikaans. Title: BOLCA: Annotated Video and Memory Aid Sharing in Turkish, Arabic, and Russian
Body: From http://www.international.ucla.edu/article.asp?parentid=107560 One web application just launched by the Center for World Languages (CWL) at UCLA lets language instructors borrow teaching materials and strategies from their colleagues. Known as the Business Online Language and Culture Application, or BOLCA (Turkish for "aplenty"), the application for the first time uses web-based content management to create and share memory aids and annotated videos used in language courses. "It finally gives the language instructor the ability to construct their own exercises without the need of a technical person," explains Jessica Mentesoglu, an instructional technology specialist with the UCLA Library who has led the development of BOLCA and its pilot Turkish lessons. The talking e-flashcards and other tools that she invented for BOLCA, with help from her husband Kaya Mentesoglu's information technology group at the Institute, can be recycled, mutatis mutandis, for students of any language. Title: The Afghanistan Digital Library
Body: From http://afghanistandl.nyu.edu/about.html The immediate objective of the Afghanistan Digital Library is to retrieve and restore the first sixty years of Afghanistan’s published cultural heritage. The project is collecting, cataloging, digitizing, and making available over the Internet as many Afghan publications from the period 1871–1930 as it is possible to identify and locate. In addition to books, this will eventually include all published serials, documents, pamphlets, and manuals. In time the project plans to carry the dissemination of Afghan publications through the period between 1931 and 1950. Providing universal availability to this broad historical span of Afghanistan’s published history, and in the process constructing a national bibliography for the country, the Afghanistan Digital Library will reconstruct an essential part of Afghanistan’s cultural heritage. Body: Bill Comer and Svetlana Vassileva-Karagyozova have put together a Polish-English Vocabulary to accompany Malgorzata Malolepsza and Aneta Szymkiewicz's textbook Hurra po polsku 1 (Kraków: Prolog, 2006). The glossary in PDF can be downloaded at: http://www.crees.ku.edu/teachers/Teachers.shtml#polish . It provides English definitions for virtually all the words found in the textbook and lists key grammatical forms for the most common words.
