Title: Free Resources at TaskMagic
Body: Some free stuff has been added to the TaskMagic site and some previously available stuff has been updated. See below for (1) free updates for those with TaskMagic2 and (2) completely free stuff for anyone, whether they have TaskMagic or not. 1) For those with TaskMagic2: Downloadable Special Editions of Football, Jump!, Flashcards and TowerBlock. Now, as well as being able to access the contents of all Text Match files in a particular directory as the basis for these games, the user can now select which files they want to include in - or exclude from - the games, so you could have several .tmfoot files in a directory, each one covering a number of different Text Match files. See http://www.mdlsoft.co.uk/otherdownloads.htm for more info. 2) And for those who don't have TaskMagic, the following were added to the site in the past month: Free demos: - A Text Match demo with 20 self-contained files demonstrating the kinds of things that can be matched in Text Match. Completely free for anyone to download and use. See http://www.mdlsoft.co.uk/otherdownloads.htm#textmatchdemo - A Mix & Gap demo with 7 self-contained files (covering French, Spanish, Italian, Science & Geography). Again completely free for anyone to download and use for as long as they like. See http://www.mdlsoft.co.uk/otherdownloads.htm#mixandgapdemo Free game downloads - zip files for French, German, Spanish, Literacy, Maths, Geography, Science, each containing 3 games: Football, TowerBlock and Jump! See http://www.mdlsoft.co.uk/otherdownloads.htm#FTJ Lapworth, M. [mflresources] TaskMagic website updates. MFL Resources listserv (mflresources@yahoogroups.com, 11 May 2009).

Title: Book: Content and Language Integrated Learning
Body: From http://www.multilingual-matters.com/display.asp?isb=9781847691651 Content and Language Integrated Learning Edited by Yolanda Ruiz De Zarobe and Rosa Maria Jimenez Catalan Publisher: Multilingual Matters Summary: This book contributes to the growth of interest in Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL), an approach to second/foreign language learning that requires the use of the target language to learn content. Within the framework of European strategies to promote multilingualism, CLIL has begun to be used extensively in a variety of language learning contexts, and at different educational systems and language programmes. This book brings together critical analyses on theoretical and implementation issues of Content and Language Integrated Learning, and empirical studies on the effectiveness of this type of instruction on learners' language competence. The basic theoretical assumption behind this book is that through successful use of the language to learn content, learners will develop their language proficiency more effectively while they learn the academic content specified in the curricula. Title: Book: The Acquisition of Sociolinguistic Competence in a Study Abroad Context
Body: From http://www.multilingual-matters.com/display.asp?isb=9781847691569 The Acquisition of Sociolinguistic Competence in a Study Abroad Context by Vera Regan, Martin Howard, and Isabelle Lemee Publisher: Multilingual Matters Summary: This volume explores the relationship between 'study abroad' and the acquisition of 'sociolinguistic competence' - the ability to communicate in socially appropriate ways. The volume looks at language development and use during study abroad in France by examining patterns of variation in the speech of advanced L2 speakers. Within a variationist paradigm, fine-grained empirical analyses of speech illuminate choices the L2 speaker makes in relation to their new identity, gender patterns, closeness or distance maintained in the social context in which they find themselves. Using both cross-sectional and longitudinal data, four variable features of contemporary spoken French are analysed in a large population of advanced Irish-English speakers of French. This close-up picture provides empirical evidence by which to evaluate the wide-spread assumption that Study Abroad is highly beneficial for second language learning. Visit the publisher’s website at http://www.multilingual-matters.com/display.asp?isb=9781847691569 .
