Body: From http://clear.msu.edu/clear/professionaldev/summerworkshops.php Teaching Writing in the Foreign Language Classroom Jul 23rd, 2009 (Thu) -- Jul 25th, 2009 (Sat) This workshop will begin with a discussion of how writing fits into a general skills foreign language class and the role writing plays in meeting the National Standards for Foreign Language Teaching. We will then try activities that use writing as a tool to promote overall proficiency and that target specific grammatical structures and vocabulary. Next, we will focus on essay writing including how to construct assignments, create prewriting activities, and give feedback on and assess assignments. Title: Teachers of Critical Languages Program Follow-On Projects
Body: From http://www.americancouncils.org/TCLP/index.php The Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA) of the U.S. Department of State is pleased to announce support for follow-on projects to assist Teachers of Critical Languages Program (TCLP) alumni and institutions to support mutual understanding by helping to increase the number of Americans teaching and learning critical need languages. These projects can be proposed by current or previous exchange teachers, mentor teachers, host schools, or host school districts. Projects that allow continued collaboration between schools and their exchange teachers, as well as those that contribute to or develop US schools' critical foreign language programs, can be supported with awards up to approximately $5,000. Grants will be awarded on an ongoing basis. Body: The National Council of State Supervisors for Language (NCSSFL) and the Cultural Division of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office (TECRO) jointly announce "Short-Term Chinese and English Language Research Award Program" This pilot program will allow five American educational administrators or school teachers to visit Taiwan and conduct research on either Chinese or English language teaching and learning. Each award will include economy class round-trip airfare and a daily living expense allowance (USD $200 per day/approx. This is contract work which is perfect for freelancers, but can also be performed around a regular job with a minimum weekly commitment. Training is ON-SITE in White Plains, NY, but actual work is performed remotely with a land line and a connection to Internet. Body: The Department of Asian Languages and Cultures at University of Michigan invites applications for the position of Lecturer I in Hindi beginning September 1, 2009. The position is a renewable one-year appointment, and is subject to final budgetary approval. Applicants should have a Master's degree in a relevant field such as the following: Hindi language, literature, or linguistics; Hindi Studies; second-language acquisition, TESL, etc. Native or near-native proficiency in Hindi and English is required; at least one year of experience teaching Hindi at the college/university level is preferred. Duties will include 12 weekly hours of instruction in all levels of Hindi language and active participation in teamwork and program affairs. The application dossier should include an application letter explaining your qualifications and teaching philosophy, a current CV, and three letters of recommendation. By Alexandra Zavis and Andrew Becker May 4, 2009 Starting today, 10 Los Angeles-area Army recruiting offices will begin taking applications from some foreigners who are here on temporary visas or who have been granted asylum. In all, the pilot program, which was launched in New York in February, seeks to enlist 1,000 military recruits with special language and medical skills, most of whom will join the Army. Response to the program has exceeded expectations, drawing applications from more than 7,000 people around the country, many of them highly educated, defense officials said. Agnes Kovacs and Jacques Mehler at the International School for Advanced Studies in Trieste say that some aspects of the cognitive development of infants raised in a bilingual household must be undergoing acceleration in order to manage which of the two languages they are dealing with.
