Title: Summer Intensive Teacher Training Program 2009: Hindi, Urdu, Arabic, Persian
Body: From http://www.scps.nyu.edu/areas-of-study/foreign-languages/continuing-education/startalk.html The NYU STARTALK program will offer two intensive teacher training workshops—one in Hindu and Urdu, the other in Arabic and Persian. These are intensive, ten-day residential workshops designed to enhance the knowledge and skills of current and prospective school, community, and college teachers of Hindi, Urdu, Arabic or Persian. Participants learn the most up-to-date, standards-based teaching methodologies and are required to develop, observe, and critique classroom procedures, strategies, and teaching techniques. The programs include a cultural component in which participants learn how to use the resources available in the community environment. This program will provide a four-week professional development program in the U.S. for secondary school teachers from Russia, followed by a two-week program in Russia for U.S. teachers and the Russian educators, and a workshop in Russia led by the Russian teachers for Russian colleagues. Title: Tamil Lecturer Position in Michigan
Body: The Department of Asian Languages and Cultures at University of Michigan invites applications for a renewable Lecturer position in Tamil language starting September 1, 2009. Applicants should have an MA in a relevant field, native or near-native competence in oral/written Tamil and English, at least two years of experience in teaching Tamil as a second or foreign language at the college/university level, knowledge of the US educational system, and familiarity with language teaching methodologies as well as computer-assisted language instruction. Expertise and experience in curriculum and program development are preferred. Responsibilities include 10-12 instructional hours a week at any assigned levels and active involvement in teamwork and program affairs. A complete dossier includes a letter of application explaining your qualifications and teaching philosophy, a current CV, evidence of teaching excellence, a teaching demo DVD, and three letters of recommendation. Samples of materials and/or project development are strongly recommended. About 38 districts now offer it, and more are considering it. While some students take Chinese because it's less commonly studied or is a change of pace after years of grade-school Spanish, many of them, too, say they recognize its global value.
