Title: Bilingual Babies Get an Early Edge
Body: From http://www.livescience.com/culture/090413-bilingual-smart.html Bilingual Babies Get an Early Edge By Jeremy Hsu April 13, 2009 A new study shows that bilingual babies quickly adapt to different learning cues at seven months old compared with babies from single-language households. The findings may lead researchers to rethink how hearing two languages trains the young brain, even before babies have learned how to formulate words. This early learning advantage may not necessarily translate into higher intelligence later on in life. But it does reveal that babies benefit early on from having bilingual exposure, when they themselves still babble nonsense. Title: Article: Teacher Gives Refugee Students a Chance
Body: From http://www.mysanantonio.com/news/education/Passionate_teacher_gives_refugee_students_a_chance.html Teacher gives refugee students a chance By Jenny LaCoste-Caputo April 19, 2009 Kerry Haupert's students are among thousands of refugees who have resettled in San Antonio through a program with the U.S. State Department. The agency sends refugees to several cities, channeling funds through local agencies. In San Antonio, Catholic Charities oversees the program. In 2007, the program brought 48,000 refugees to America, with 4,394 making Texas their home. Catholic Charities resettled 600 refugees here last year and expects more this year. Many of the children have spent their lives in refugee camps, never have been to school and can't read or write in their own language, let alone English. Some have witnessed terrible atrocities. Their arrival presented educators in Northside Independent School District, where most of the refugees live, with a challenge unlike any they'd ever faced. Title: Article: Learning Another Language
Body: From http://www.gothamgazette.com/article/education/20090410/6/2879 Learning Another Language by Sharmeen Gangat April 2009 While campaigning for president, Obama said he thought all American students should learn another language. Now that he has taken office, though, his push for foreign language instruction has faded. "His [Obama's] failure to include language learning in his education policy statement is regrettable," said Bret Lovejoy, executive director of the executive director of the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages. Foreign language education is particularly important in New York City, Lovejoy said, because of the city's role in commerce, finance, culture and entertainment. Judging from the numbers, foreign language education is hardly a priority in the country as a whole or in New York. One study found only 44 percent of U.S. high school students take a foreign language class. As a result, only 9 percent of Americans -- as opposed to about half of all Europeans -- speak one or more foreign languages. A 2003 report found a continuing decline in enrollments in foreign language classes across the country. Read the full article at http://www.gothamgazette.com/article/education/20090410/6/2879 .
