Title: California State Senator Sends a Message on Language, Discrimination
Body: From http://www.sacbee.com/capitolandcalifornia/story/1738545.html California state senator sends a message on language, discrimination By Susan Ferriss March 30, 2009 Witnessing someone humiliate his uncle for speaking broken English, says Leland Yee, was a childhood experience that stuck with him. The memory rushed back, the California state senator said, when the Ladies Professional Golf Association announced last September that it would start suspending foreign players – many of them South Koreans – if they lacked English proficiency. The LPGA backed down from the rule under a barrage of criticism from Lee, D-San Francisco, and civil rights groups that argued the idea seemed xenophobic. Yee now wants to make sure no one else tries to enact such a policy, at least in California. On Tuesday, the Senate's Judiciary Committee will review a bill he's introduced to change the state's Jesse Unruh Civil Rights Act. The proposal makes it illegal to prohibit the use of any language at a work site without a justified "business necessity." Title: Editorial Revisits Diogenes: Cynicism We Can Believe In
Body: From http://www.nytimes.com/2009/04/01/opinion/01critchley.html?_r=1&th&emc=th Cynicism We Can Believe In By SIMON CRITCHLEY March 31, 2009 SOME 2,300 years after his death, Diogenes the Cynic dramatically interrupted a recent New York State Senate committee meeting. Wearing a long, white beard and carrying his trademark lamp in broad daylight, the ancient philosopher — who once described himself as “a Socrates gone mad” — claimed to be looking for an honest man in politics. Considering the never-ending allegations of financial corruption that flow from the sump of Albany, it’s no surprise that he was unsuccessful. This resurrected Diogenes was, in fact, Randy Credico, a comedian who says he is considering challenging Senator Charles Schumer in the 2010 Democratic primary. Whatever boost Mr. Credico’s prank provides his campaign, it might also cause us to reflect a little on the meaning of cynicism — and how greatly we still need Diogenes. Read the full editorial at http://www.nytimes.com/2009/04/01/opinion/01critchley.html?_r=1&th&emc=th .
