Title: Roots of Federal ELL Case Run Deep
Body: From http://www.edweek.org/ew/articles/2009/04/08/28flores.h28.html?tkn=NM[CebCLA7J312GaIZMNpQ8ahyi0LWa3Ilcp Roots of Federal ELL Case Run Deep Supreme court ruling in suit could resonate far beyond Arizona By Mary Ann Zehr April 6, 2009 Seventeen years ago, Miriam Flores sent her 5-year-old namesake off to school in this small city on the U.S.-Mexican border. Come fall, she’ll send 5-year-old Isabella, her youngest, and this time around, the 42-year-old Mexican-born homemaker hopes her daughter will get a better education. The U.S. Supreme Court will hear oral arguments later this month from a class action Ms. Flores joined on behalf of her first child in 1996. The lawsuit, Flores v. State of Arizona, contends that programs for English-language learners in Nogales are deficient and receive inadequate funding from the state. Since it was filed in 1992, the lawsuit has pitted state officials against one another, and it has forced Nogales and school districts statewide to change the way they serve English-learners, including separating them for long periods of the day from other students. Title: ANVILL: A National Virtual Language Lab
Body: From https://anvill.uoregon.edu/anvill2 The Yamada Language Center at the University of Oregon has opened the doors on ANVILL 2.0, a much-improved improved version of the "speech-centric" web-based software they have been developing in collaboration with the Center for Applied Second Language Studies and duber dot com. If you've worked with other open source content management systems (Moodle, Blackboard, etc), then creating web-based lessons with ANVILL should come easily. The speech tools are designed to replace some of the traditional speaking activities of the "language lab"; if you have used Wimba or Voicethread, or similar streaming media-based tools, you'll know what we're talking about. ANVILL's advantage is that it is non-commercial and free. We encourage you to check it out. We supply the servers and the storage space. Teachers can begin creating courses and taking advantage of its tools as soon as they sign up for an account. They manage their own enrollments. The ANVILL project is particularly interested in working with K-12 teachers who are interested in partnering with other schools around the country (and who don't mind learning with us as we further develop the software). Learn more about ANVILL at the ANVILL website: http://anvill.uoregon.edu .
