Title: Information Gap Activities
Body: From http://www.vistasonline.com All Information Gap Activities in the PANORAMA 2/e Information Gap Activities Booklet are provided here in PDF format for your convenience. You may print and copy these files for use in your classes. Students will be working in pairs. Each activity consists of two handouts, one for Estudiante 1 and one for Estudiante 2. Before students begin, instruct them not to look at each other's handout. Advise them that they each have a different set of instructions or information they need to use in order to complete the task at hand, which will require them to talk, listen, and react to one another. Although the activities are aligned with the Panorama 2e textbook, they could be useful for instructors using other curricula, as well. The information gap activities are available at http://www.vistasonline.com/panorama2e/instructors/infogap .

Title: Article: In School for the First Time, Teenage Immigrants Struggle
Body: From http://www.nytimes.com/2009/01/25/education/25ellis.html In School for the First Time, Teenage Immigrants Struggle By JENNIFER MEDINA January 24, 2009 New York City classrooms have long been filled with children from all over the world, and the education challenges they bring with them. But hidden among the nearly 150,000 students across the city still struggling to learn English are an estimated 15,100 who have had little or no formal schooling and are often illiterate in their native languages. More than half of these arrive as older teenagers and land in the city’s high schools, where they must learn how to learn even as their peers prepare for state subject exams required for a diploma. Title: Article: English Language Learners Make Fluency Progress in Massachusetts
Body: From http://www.boston.com/news/education/k_12/mcas/articles/2009/01/25/mcas_fluency_pressures_build MCAS, fluency pressures build Lawrence students make notable gains in test scores By Kate Augusto January 25, 2009 Most of the students who are learning to speak English with teacher Mary DeSimone in Lawrence are motivated to be successful, with many of their parents working two jobs to open opportunities for them. But when it comes to MCAS, the pressure is high: It takes five to seven years on average to become fluent in a language, and eighth-graders have three years to pass 10th-grade MCAS exams in English to get a diploma, DeSimone said. But this year the students were excited, as they made notable gains in state MCAS scores. Sharman Sullivan, the principal of the Edward F. Parthum School, credits the success in part to Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol, a program that began in Lawrence three years ago where English is taught during other academic classes, and teachers use strategies to make content accessible to English language learners.
