Body: From http://www.aatg.org/content/view/468/34 TPRS Seminar - Sweet Briar College, VA - July 26-31, 2009 Description: TPRS is a method that is revitalizing German programs. Come learn how to use TPRS in your classroom or improve your TPRS skills. This workshop is taught by Julie Baird (Wawasee High School, Syracuse, IN), Rob Williams (Fairfax High School, Fairfax, VA), and Hank Schwab (North Brunswick Township High School, New Brunswick, NJ), three respected German TPRSers. They are assisted by Kellye Deane (Gretna High School, Gretna, NE). The workshop is arranged with a combination of break-out sessions and whole group instruction to cover the needs of beginners through experienced TPRS teachers. Title: Workshop: Teaching East Asian Literature in the High School
Body: From http://www.iub.edu/~easc/outreach/educators/literature/index.shtml Teaching East Asian Literature in the High School July 12-18, 2009; Indiana University Bloomington Application deadline: March 6, 2009 This annual weeklong, intensive summer workshop is for high school English and world literature teachers who are interested in incorporating Chinese, Japanese, and Korean literature into their curriculum. Following the workshop, each participant develops a complete lesson plan for at least one of the pieces covered in the workshop. Those who turn in their lesson plan by the deadline are eligible to receive a $300 book-buying grant. Each participant will design a small classroom research project during the course of the institute and carry it out during the fall 2009 term. Applications are invited from faculty in languages, linguistics, and education. Graduate students are encouraged to apply, and some financial assistance may be available for them. Title: World Language Teachers Invited to Ohio Global Institute 2009
Body: Applications are now available for the Ohio Global Institute which will be held August 3-6, 2009 at Kent State University. This interdisciplinary event is open to teachers in grades K-12. One hundred teachers will be chosen with priority given to school teams. The institute will help teachers incorporate a global perspective into their standards-based instruction. World language classes provide an opportunity for students to connect with the world and develop a deeper understanding of other cultures. This institute will provide language teachers with updated information on global issues and free materials. If you are interested in learning how you can broaden the horizons of your students, the Global Institute welcomes your application to attend. The application deadline is March 20, 2009. Title: Part-Time Position: Hebrew Language Consultant
Body: The National Foreign Language Center at the University of Maryland is seeking a Hebrew consultant to review the Hebrew content for our Assessment Objects. The content consists of reading passages such as newspaper articles and listening passages such as radio broadcasts. The consultant will review the content’s three main criteria: level, length and topic. The work will begin as soon as possible and continue until the end of May. The work is part-time and is done from one’s home computer. The compensation is $25.00 for each passage review. Title: Hindi Language Instructor Position at Rutgers University
Body: The Department of African, Middle Eastern and South Asian Languages and Literatures at Rutgers University (New Brunswick) invites applications for a renewable annual position in Hindi language instruction beginning Fall, 2009, subject to final budgetary approval. The ideal candidate will have a PhD in a relevant field -- e.g. Hindi, (Applied) Linguistics, (Foreign/Second/Heritage) Language Education, Second Language Acquisition -- although candidates with an M.A. or M.S. will be considered. Native or near-native proficiency in both spoken and written Hindi, as well as competence in communicative, learner-centered language pedagogy and creative use of instructional technology, are required. Knowledge of Urdu and of both the Devanagari and Perso-Arabic alphabets would be an additional asset. The successful candidate will teach six courses per academic year at the elementary, intermediate and advanced levels. Salary is commensurate with education and experience. Victoria University PhD graduate Paul Sulzberger made his discovery while trying to find out why many students dropped out in the early days of trying to learn a new language. Listening to a language's sound patterns was critical as it set up structures in the brain required to learn the words, he found.
