Body: From https://apps.americancouncils.org/webForms/?frmno=23 The U.S. Department of State is pleased to announce Intensive Summer Language Institutes in Arabic, Chinese, and Russian for 2009 as part of the National Security Language Initiative. The goal of the program is to strengthen critical need foreign language instruction at U.S. schools by providing intermediate and advanced level teachers of Arabic, Chinese, and Russian as a Foreign Language with the opportunity for intensive language study abroad. The summer 2009 program is open to current K-12 teachers as well as community college instructors of Arabic, Chinese, and Russian; university students enrolled in education programs intending to teach these languages are also eligible to participate. The program is designed for non-native speakers of Arabic, Chinese, and Russian. Together, the Governor's Foreign Language Academies for French, German, Japanese, Latin, Russian, and Spanish, and the Virginia STARTALK Academies for Arabic and Chinese form the Virginia Foreign Language Academies: A Global Village. Academies at Virginia Commonwealth University Richmond, Virginia * June 27-July 19, 2009 o Governor's French Academy o Governor's German Academy o Governor's Spanish Academy * June 28-July 19, 2009 o Governor's Japanese Academy o Governor's Latin Academy o Governor's Russian Academy o STARTALK Arabic Academy o STARTALK Chinese Academy Students must be nominated by an accredited public high school from a Virginia public school division or a private school that is accredited by the Virginia Council for Private Education or other accrediting agency. Language administrators, educators, teachers, and college students interested in a position at the 2009 Academies are encouraged to apply. Language teachers from across the state are allowed to visit the academy of their language to observe and learn from the experience. This teacher observer program has proven highly successful as a leadership and staff development experience. Body: NNELL, The National Network for Early Language Learning, is pleased to offer the 2009 Southeast Regional Professional Development Workshop entitled “Meeting the Needs of ALL Learners.” This workshop will be presented by Dr. Marjorie Hall-Haley, the Director of the Foreign/World Languages Teacher Licensure Program at George Mason University, on April 25, 2009 in Fairfax, VA. Title: Hindi Language Instructor Position at Rutgers University
Body: HINDI LANGUAGE INSTRUCTOR The Department of African, Middle Eastern and South Asian Languages and Literatures at Rutgers University (New Brunswick) invites applications for a renewable annual position in Hindi language instruction beginning Fall, 2009, subject to final budgetary approval. The ideal candidate will have a PhD in a relevant field -- e.g. Hindi, (Applied) Linguistics, (Foreign/Second/Heritage) Language Education, Second Language Acquisition -- although candidates with an M.A. or M.S. will be considered. Native or near-native proficiency in both spoken and written Hindi, as well as competence in communicative, learner-centered language pedagogy and creative use of instructional technology, are required. Knowledge of Urdu and of both the Devanagari and Perso-Arabic alphabets would be an additional asset. The successful candidate will teach six courses per academic year at the elementary, intermediate and advanced levels. Salary is commensurate with education and experience.
