Currently it offers a number of Japanese language modules at elementary, intermediate and advanced levels. The medium of instruction at the NUS is English. Applicants for the positions should have at least a relevant Master's degree with several years of teaching experience. Appointment will be made on a three-year contract, renewable subject to mutual agreement. Remuneration will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. Body: From: "Guven Witteveen" Lecturer in Japanese, jointly appointed by the Residential College and the Department of Asian Languages and Cultures One three-year lectureship in Japanese starting Fall 2004; subsequent renewal contingent on enrollments, performance and budget. Applicants should have at least an M.A., native proficiency, and a record of proven excellence in teaching the Japanese language. Primary responsibility is to develop and teach in a new semi-immersion Japanese Program involving a sequence of two intensive semester-long courses (at the first- and second-year level, respectively), daily extra-classroom conversational sessions, and a comprehensive examination at the end of each year. A salary supplement will be provided for development of the Program in summer 2004. The Residential College is an undergraduate academic unit and living-learning community within the College of Literature, Science and the Arts (LS&A), with an interdisciplinary academic curriculum and highly-regarded intensive language programs in Spanish, French, German, Russian and Latin. The Department of Asian Languages and Cultures is an undergraduate and graduate academic unit within LS&A, offering courses on East Asia, South Asia, and Southeast Asia in many Humanities disciplines and instruction in both classical and modern Japanese, Chinese and Tibetan, as well as in12 other modern languages of the region. Title: Graduate Fellowship in Japan
Body: From: "Katie Aslan" Date: Wednesday, December 03, 2003 9:14 AM Announcing the KCC/CCI Graduate Fellowship in Japan In 1997 Kobe College Corporation (KCC) established the Graduate Fellowships Program as part of its Cross Cultural Institute (CCI) to fund qualified graduate students for one year of research of study in Japan. Fellowships are for $24,000, one year, and not renewable. The purpose of the program is to support future American educators to become more knowledgeable about Japan. It is expected that recipients of these fellowships will return to the US to teach about Japan. While in Japan, fellowship recipients will be expected to visit Kobe (Jogakuin) College in Nishinomiya to give a presentation on the fellowship topic. Fellows will speak at a key meeting of the CCI in the US upon completion of the fellowship year. Applications are due by January 10, 2004. Title: Japanese proficiency assessment of all four skills
Body: From: "Sachiko Kamioka" Dear Japanese teachers, The Center for Applied Second Language Studies (CASLS) has launched the first pilot version of Japanese STAMP 2, integrated online proficiency assessment of all four skills. We hope that this assessment will contribute to the field by making proficiency assessment easy and affordable. The first step is to verify the items to ensure that they are reliable and valid. We welcome you to review STAMP 2 and consider giving the test to your students as a part of our pilot. The pilot will continue till the end of January. TO TAKE A LOOK AT STAMP 2: 1. From your Internet browser, go to http://www.languageassessment.net 2. Log in using user name: pilotv4-test and password: 3210 (This user name will give you access to items at Novice-high and Intermediate-low level only.) 3. To see test result page, log off and log back in using user name: pilotv4-teacher and password 7415 In addition to helping the field develop a better way to measure student performance, having your students participate in the pilot will help them understand what they have to do to be proficient in Japanese. STAMP 2 is innovative both pedagogically and technically. Real-life tasks assess interpretive and presentational modes in the national standards. The interpretive section (listening and reading) is computer adaptive and its results become available immediately after test. Presentational mode (speaking and writing) sections are graded by human graders. The test uses streaming video and technology to record and deliver sound files over the Internet. To take the test, students just need a recent browser and Quicktime, both of which ARE INSTALLED ON MOST COMPUTERS OR can be downloaded for free.
