Center for East Asian Studies, University of Wisconsin-Madison 3rd Annual Winter Workshop, With Funding from the U.S. Department of Education A one-day workshop for Japanese Language K-12 Teachers in the Midwest Motivational Curriculum and Syllabus Design Saturday, Jan. 31, 2004, 9:00am-4:30pm 206 Ingraham Hall, 1155 Observatory Drive, University of Wisconsin Madison Campus Informal Reception Friday, Jan. 30, 2004, 7:00-9:00pm, Lowell Hall 610 Landon Street, Madison How do you develop articulated curricula and syllabi to prepare students who can communicate? How should you use your assigned textbook effectively? Workshop focuses on strategies and processes of designing motivational curriculum and syllabus that articulate across levels and enhance students communication skills. The discussion of the following points will be supported by the presentation of sample student outcomes: Elements of curriculum: language learning continuum Defining expected students outcomes and creating motivational outcomes Tips to create rubrics for assessment Tips to create motivational year/semester curriculum Participants are expected to bring the textbook(s) that they are currently using and to be prepared to engage in a lot of group activities. Chief Instructor: Dr. Yoshiko Saito-Abbott Professor, California State University, Monterey Bay Dr. Yoshiko Saito-Abbott directs the Japanese program and teaches various levels of Japanese language courses and methods courses for the certificate program in the School of Education at California State University, Monterey Bay. She is the director of the Monterey Bay Foreign Language Project where she provides professional development for k-16 teachers in the California Central Coast Area. She has a Ph. D. in Foreign Language Education and Instructional Design and Technology.
