Title: Bank of Sounds and Images in Spanish
Body: From http://bancoimagenes.isftic.mepsyd.es The Spanish Ministry of Education and Science has available a collection of images and sound files on the Internet. The collection is available for educational use and the items tend to be more oriented to the target Spanish culture than other more generic image and sound databases. For example, searching for elephants results in, among other things, an elephant keeper calling an elephant in the Madrid Zoo. This resource is available at http://bancoimagenes.isftic.mepsyd.es .

Title: Article: Aspects of Business English
Body: From http://teachingenglish.org.uk/think Aspects of Business English Written by Helen Mehta October 22, 2008 The term Business English can cover a multitude of things. When someone says they teach business English or they are studying business English it is quite possible that the speaker and the listener may have a different understanding of the term. In fact, I recently did a training session with a group of 20 teachers and when I asked them to complete the sentence ‘Business English is.............' They came up with a diverse range of sentences, encompassing language, business communication skills needed for the world of work like telephoning, and aspects of culture. In this article, I will attempt to clarify the term business English and discuss some of the pros and cons of teaching it. Read the entire article at http://teachingenglish.org.uk/think/articles/aspects-business-english .

Title: WestEd's SchoolsMovingUp Presents Three Webinars on English Learners
Body: WestEd's SchoolsMovingUp website will feature three free webinars next week. All webinars will take place from 10:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. Pacific Time (1:30 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. Eastern Time). The first webinar, on Tuesday, October 28, is “What the Research Does - and Does Not - Say About Teaching English Language Learners." In this presentation, Claude Goldenberg, Professor of Education at Stanford University, will summarize key findings of two major reviews of the research on educating English learners. These reviews represent the most concerted efforts to date to identify the best knowledge available and set the stage for renewed efforts to find effective approaches to help English learners succeed in school. Although there are numerous areas in which there is insufficient research to guide policy and practice, this webinar will provide guidelines based on the strongest research about effective practices for teaching English learners. The second webinar of the week, "Building Oral Language into the Basal (Encore Presentation) ," will take place on Wednesday, October 29. In this presentation co-sponsored by SchoolsMovingUp and CREATE (Center for Research on the Educational Achievement and Teaching of English Language Learners), Diane August, Senior Research Scientist at the Center for Applied Linguistics, will describe methods to develop the language proficiency skills of English learners in the context of language arts, math, and science instruction in elementary and middle schools. Examples of methods include read-alouds of expository and narrative text and hands-on experiences to build academic language. This work is part of ongoing research funded by the US Department of Education to improve the language and literacy skills of English learners. On Thursday, October 30, the webinar "Web Tour Taking Center Stage - Act II: Ensuring Success for Middle Grades English Learners ," will showcase a unique Web site designed to help educators close the achievement gap in the middle grades so that students are prepared to succeed in high school. Carol Abbott, author of Taking Center Stage - Act II, and consultant with the Middle and High School Improvement Office of the California Department of Education (CDE), and Jeanette Ganahl, Administrator, English Learner Accountability Unit, CDE, will guide participants to key English learner resources and best practices on the Taking Center Stage-Act II middle grades Web site. The presenters will answer questions about best practices for engaging middle grades English learners, as well as share several examples and strategies that school leaders can use to guide staff members in using this free, online resource that was developed by CDE for middle grades educators and administrators. See the Online Events page on SchoolsMovingUp for further information, including specific topics to be addressed by these events, at http://www.schoolsmovingup.net/onlineevents .

Title: Primary Modern Foreign Language Resources Yahoo Group Available
Body: Some MFLResources users have set up a yahoo group which can 'host' uploaded resources for those people who do not have access to or the time to manage their own website or blog. Feel free to take a look and to use it as a 'repository' for anything you'd like to share that is specifically 'primary languages'. You don't have to sign up to emails .. you can just join the group 'online' and check on a regular basis / follow links made in existing fora to see if files have been added if you prefer. Or you can sign up to emails and add attachments to your mails. They've set the site up to require a 'comment' on the reason for joining as a way of trying to avoid undesirables. The comment can be really short e.g. 'I am a French teacher'! Here's a link to the yahoo area: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/primarymflresources And here's a link to the page where the resources could eventually be stored: http://www.mflresources.org.uk/primarymfl.htm Myers, H. [mflresources] Primary mflresources Yahoo group available. MFLResources listserv (mflresources@yahoogroups.com, 22 Oct 2008).
