Title: Call for Papers: SOCALLT 2009
Body: SOCALLT welcomes submission of presentation proposals for its 2009 annual conference. The deadline for submissions is Friday, November 29, 2008. SOCALLT 2009 will be held at Southwestern University in Georgetown, Texas (near Austin) on February 13-14 (Friday & Saturday), 2009. The South Central Association for Language Learning Technology invites SOCALLT/IALLT members and other language teaching professionals who use instructional technologies (including foreign languages, heritage languages, ESL and ASL) to participate in our next annual meeting. Proposals should address issues and innovations in technology-enhanced language instruction. We encourage participation not only from colleagues at universities, but also community colleges and K-12 educators. SOCALLT regularly publishes proceedings of the conferences (search in amazon.com under "SOCALLT"), and all presenters are encouraged to submit their presentations in writing for publication in the proceedings. SOCALLT is an affiliate of IALLT, comprising the six-state region of Arkansas, Colorado, Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Texas. The proposal must include Name of presenter(s), affiliation, presentation type (individual or joint presentations for 30 minutes, demonstrations for 30 minutes, workshops for 1 hour, and panel discussions for 30-60 minutes), title, and 200-word abstract. Title: Summer MA Program in Japanese Pedagogy at Columbia University
Body: The Graduate School of Arts and Sciences (Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures) invites applications for the summer M.A. program in Japanese Pedagogy. The 2009 program will begin on Monday, June 1st and last until Friday, July 31st, during which time the following courses will be taught: (1) Intermediate/Advanced Japanese Pedagogy (6/1-6/19), Professor Seiichi Makino and Dr. Tomoko Shibata of Princeton University; (2) Pragmatics (6/22-7/3), Professor Mutsuko Endo Hudson of Michigan State University; (3) History of Japanese Language (7/6-7/17), Professor Peter Hendriks of Australian National University; (4) Second Language Acquisition Theory (7/20-7/31), Professor Yoshiko Mori of Georgetown University. Title: Center for Arabic Study Abroad Fellowships
Body: From http://www.utexas.edu/cola/centers/casa CASA offers advanced level training in Arabic language and culture to qualified American students at its two locations at the American University in Cairo, Egypt and at the University of Damascus, Syria. Applicants to the various CASA programs must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents and should have completed a minimum of 3 years of formal instruction in Arabic prior to joining CASA. The Center for Arabic Study Abroad (CASA) offers four programs: * CASA I Summer Only (Cairo) * CASA I Full-Year (Cairo and Damascus) * CASA II for Recent Alumni (Cairo) * CASA III for Faculty (Cairo) The Summer and Full-Year programs are designed for graduate and undergraduate students. The CASA II program aims to provide further opportunities for CASA fellows who have completed the CASA Full-Year program within the past five years, to continue to enhance their language skills and advance their Arabic-based research in Egypt. We plan to add a CASA II component to the CASA program in Damascus in the near future. The CASA III program is designed to meet the linguistic and research needs of professors with specialization in Arabic and Middle Eastern Studies. Candidates should demonstrate the ability to apply current best practices in foreign language instruction in the Japanese classroom. Familiarity with the use of educational technology is desirable. The successful candidate will also be responsible for coordinating the Japanese minor, supervising part-time faculty teaching lower-level Japanese courses, and helping the department develop the Japanese curriculum. Candidate must possess native or near-native fluency in Japanese. Masters degree is required by starting date of August 20, 2009. Kent State University is a large, multi-language department with concentrations in literature/culture, pedagogy, and translation. Application deadline is January 15, 2009. The program also provides additional training for teachers of these critical languages. In the summer of 2008, one STARTALK institute at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge brought together students with and without disabilities to learn Arabic and to explore Arabic culture through multimedia presentations, field trips and lectures guided by scholars from the United States and abroad.
