The ancient language is being taught as early as third grade in public, charter and private metro-area schools, and enrollment is growing. Enrollment in Minnesota Latin classes rose 65 percent between the 2000-01 and 2006-07 school years, according to a state Department of Education survey. It was one of the fastest-growing languages to study in the state. Read the entire article at http://www.twincities.com/news/ci_10831284?nclick_check=1 .

Title: The Best Online Karaoke Sites For English Language Learners
Body: From http://larryferlazzo.edublogs.org Singing feels much less threatening to many who are learning a new language. Karaoke is a good language-development activity, and there are quite a few karaoke sites on the Internet. In order to make it on this list, a site has to be available free-of-charge (or at least some of its resources have to be free), easy-to-use, require no download, and allow students — either alone or in a group — to record themselves singing. A link to their performance can then be posted on a student or teacher website. There are only a few sites that meet that criteria. View the choices at http://larryferlazzo.edublogs.org/2008/10/15/the-best-online-karaoke-sites-for-english-language-learners .

Title: Website Helps English Learners with Academic Vocabulary
Body: From http://www.nottingham.ac.uk/~alzsh3/acvocab/index.htm This site will help you expand your academic vocabulary using the Academic Word List (the AWL). You can try learning some words from the list every day, but it is better to study the words in context, so that you understand how they are used. To quickly and easily identify words from the AWL in a text, use the AWL Highlighter. This program will show the academic words in bold. You can use the AWL Gapmaker to create tests for yourself. This program will replace words from the AWL with a gap. Try to fill the gaps, then check your work by using the highlighted text. In this way you can expand your core academic vocabulary. Access this site at http://www.nottingham.ac.uk/~alzsh3/acvocab/index.htm .

Title: Idea for Choosing Partners
Body: A MoreTPRS listserv user suggests the following variations on the “Partner Clock” idea: I use clocks first, then switch to countries, then parts of a house, then school subjects, then clothing, etc. I'll say "You have a date with a person from math class/in the bathroom/and you wear a skirt, etc." We switch every month or so. Great way to recycle vocab and get kids paired quickly. --- For an explanation of clock partners, try the FLTEACH archives: http://listserv.buffalo.edu/cgi-bin/wa?S2=FLTEACH&q=partner+clock&s=&f=&a=&b= .
