Title: Article: Kindergartners Urged to Learn Key Languages
Body: From http://www.edweek.org/ew/articles/2008/07/08/127889spebacktoschoolyounglanguagelearners_ap.html?tmp=2072520659 Kindergartners Urged to Learn Key Languages By The Associated Press July 9, 2008 The first-graders in Grace Yuan's class are playing "Jeopardy," eagerly responding to clues about animals and their habitats, diet and movements. Sound routine for a group of 7-year-olds? Well, look again. These clues are in Chinese. The class is a result of the National Security Language Initiative, introduced by President Bush in 2006 to teach the youngest students Chinese and other foreign languages considered critical to the nation's future security. The federal program is based on the premise that you can engage foreign governments and their citizens more effectively when you speak their language. The emphasis is on "critical needs" languages, including Chinese, Arabic, Russian, Hindi and Farsi. The Education Department, one of four federal agencies involved in the program, has awarded 88 grants totaling about $26 million to communities around the country to expand instruction in these languages beginning in kindergarten. Title: Obama Tells Kids to Stay in School, Learn a Foreign Language
Body: From http://embeds.blogs.foxnews.com/2008/07/08/obama-tells-kids-to-stay-in-school-learn-a-foreign-language Obama Tells Kids to Stay in School, Learn a Foreign Language by Bonney Kapp July 8, 2008 At his Georgia town hall meeting, Obama cautioned kids not to drop out of school to pursue a far-fetched dream. Addressing a mostly African American crowd outside Atlanta, Obama joked, “You can’t find a job unless you are a really, really good basketball player. Which most of you brothers are not. I know you think you are. But you’re not. You are overrated in your own mind. You will not play in the NBA. You are probably not that good a rapper. Maybe you are the next Little Wayne, but probably not. In which case you need to stay in school.” On a roll, Obama then said they’d be much more employable if they know a foreign language, and said we should be emphasizing foreign language study in classrooms. “It’s embarrassing when Europeans come over here, they all speak English, they speak French, they speak German. And then we go over to Europe and all we can say is merci beaucoup.” Obama is scheduled to address the League of United Latin American Citizens’ national convention in Washington, DC, this afternoon.

Title: Article: Western Carolina University Joins Cherokee Language Partnership
Body: From http://www.indiancountry.com/content.cfm?id=1096417684 Western Carolina University joins Cherokee language partnership July 9, 2008 On June 5, Chancellor John Bardo committed Western Carolina University to joining a community-university partnership focused on revitalizing the Cherokee language. The Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, the Cherokee Nation and Northeastern State University, in Tahlequah, Okla., are Western's partners in the effort. Among the primary goals of the agreement are sharing resources and combining efforts in seeking outside funding for language projects. The partnership should help attract funding because funding agencies appreciate joint efforts between universities, and between universities and communities, Francis said. A Cherokee dictionary, shared teacher training and a ''study abroad'' experience between the Eastern Band and the Cherokee Nation are among the first goals of the partnership.
