Title: Article: Italian American Groups Speak Up to Save AP Language Test
Body: From http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/07/02/AR2008070203564_pf.html Italian American Groups Speak Up to Save AP Language Test By Daniel de Vise July 3, 2008 The prospect that AP Italian might be eliminated has set off a reaction that might seem surprising, considering that 2,000 students took the Italian AP exam this year. Prominent Italian American groups and Matilda Cuomo, wife of former New York governor Mario Cuomo, have mobilized to save the course. Italian Ambassador Giovanni Castellaneta has also weighed in with the nonprofit organization that oversees the AP program. The episode illustrates the sway of the AP program, which measures high school students against the standards of college. The program has emerged alongside International Baccalaureate and Cambridge as the top tier for college-bound juniors and seniors. Good scores on end-of-course exams can yield credit and advanced standing in college. Leaders of the College Board decided in late March to eliminate four of the program's 37 courses, including AP Italian, saying the four were under-enrolled and losing money. The last tests for French literature, Latin literature and computer science are scheduled for May. The AP Italian course might be saved if sufficient funds could be raised, said officials with the College Board, which is based in New York. Title: Big "ß" is Now Officially a German Letter
Body: Many German learners will recognize the "ß", also known as the "Eszett". That strange looking letter that represents a sharp double-s in the German language has now been officially accepted as an upper case figure in the German alphabet by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). Until now, the letter "ß" has only been a lower-case figure, causing all sorts of problems for journalists and advertisers who needed to find ways to avoid capitalizing the letter. Or the big "ß" was simply written as "SS" in situations where capitalization was unavoidable. But now it has been granted official status under the ISO’s "special consonants found in western European languages". Whether this means that the new character will now be integrated on German computer keyboards however remains unclear. But the capital "ß" has already been integrated in the latest Unicode version – the industry standard consisting of a repertoire of about 100,000 characters that allows computers to represent and manipulate text expressed in most of the world’s writing systems. Title: Schola: Latin Social Network and Resources
Body: From http://www.e.millner.btinternet.co.uk/languages/ScholaFAQ.html Schola is an online environment where people can use Latin in a safe atmosphere. Each user has their own CYBERDIARIUM - in other words, a blog. This can be found on 'PAGINA MEA'. You can also start and contribute to discussions in the FORUM. If you wish, you can watch the collection of VIDEOGRAPHIAE. The collection of PHOTOGRAPHIAE is useful for vocabulary learning. There are now thousands of photographs, (over 3000 ) each one set up as a flash card, for learning vocabulary. These can be downloaded and put on an ipod, or simply played as a slide show on your own computer, or used on the site. Users can send private messages to each other - if you click on a user in the SODALES section, under their photo, you will find the words MITTE NUNTIUM. This will be a private off-site message that no-one else on the site can see. If you want to write a letter that all can see, there is a text box to the right of their photo. Type in there, and press ADDE SENTENTIAM VEL OBSERVATIONEM. Schola is available at http://schola.ning.com .
