Title: Book: Developing Aspects of Second Language Discourse Competence
Body: From http://www.newbooks.de/(S(e4bfnfrk4ozcvt552xg3kr45))/Default.aspx Developing Aspects of Second Language Discourse Competence By Katherine Rehner Publisher: LINCOM EUROPA Summary: This work explores the development of aspects of discourse competence by French immersion students in Ontario, Canada. It represents a new front for second language acquisition and immersion research in that, firstly, it provides an in-depth analysis of the mastery by immersion students of several polysemous and poly-functional words (i.e., comme/like; donc/alors/(ça) fait que/so; bon; and là), words playing key roles in the expression of fundamental semantic notions (e.g., comparison, consequence, location) and discursive functions (e.g., emphasis, topic shifting, turn yielding). Secondly, it offers insight into the use of discourse markers by immersion students, an as yet under-researched area. Finally, it documents the influence on second language learners' discourse competence exerted by a range of independent factors, many of which have not before been applied to research on the development of this competence. More information about this book is available at http://www.newbooks.de/(S(e4bfnfrk4ozcvt552xg3kr45))/Default.aspx .

Title: Conference: Community Languages and ESOL
Body: From http://linguistlist.org/issues/18/18-2134.html Date: 02-Oct-2008 - 05-Oct-2008 Location: Auckland, New Zealand CLESOL is a biennial conference of language teachers in Aotearoa/New Zealand and features participants from this country and overseas. Since its inception in 1990 the CLESOL conference has brought together the needs and interests of two groups of language teachers. Community languages are the first part of the CLESOL equation. Community languages teachers are committed to maintaining the first languages of migrant and refugee groups settled in Aotearoa New Zealand, and introducing those languages to others interested in learning them. The other half of the CLESOL equation is ESOL teachers. By comparison, ESOL teachers are a much bigger group who work in State education institutions (primary, secondary and tertiary), for private language schools, or as volunteer community tutors. For more information about the conference, go to http://www.clesol.org.nz/2008/home.html .
