Title: Study: Dyslexia Differs by Language
Body: From http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/04/07/AR2008040701798.html Study: Dyslexia Differs by Language By RANDOLPH E. SCHMID Monday, April 7, 2008 WASHINGTON -- Dyslexia affects different parts of children's brains depending on whether they are raised reading English or Chinese. That finding, reported in Monday's online edition of Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, means that therapists may need to seek different methods of assisting dyslexic children from different cultures. "This finding was very surprising to us. We had not ever thought that dyslexics' brains are different for children who read in English and Chinese," said lead author Li-Hai Tan, a professor of linguistics and brain and cognitive sciences at the University of Hong Kong. "Our finding yields neurobiological clues to the cause of dyslexia." Read the entire article at http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/04/07/AR2008040701798.html .

Title: New Book: Marking Past Tense in Second Language Acquisition
Body: From http://www.continuumbooks.com/Books/detail.aspx?ReturnURL=/Search/default.aspx&CountryID=2&ImprintID=2&BookID=129677 Marking Past Tense in Second Language Acquisition: A Theoretical Model by Rafael Salaberry Publisher: Continuum Summary: This book presents an analysis of the difficulties faced by native speakers of English in the learning of Romance languages and in so doing proposes a comprehensive model of the acquisition of tense-aspect marking. While L1 speakers of English may quickly learn to identify and, to some extent, use the Spanish perfective and imperfective verb endings, the L2 representation of tense-aspect distinctions among both beginning and advanced learners requires a comprehensive multidimensional analysis. Through a detailed examination of new and existing empirical data, this monograph proposes a new model for examining tense-aspect marking in second language acquisition, which reconciles competing, alternative hypotheses. This comprehensive account will be of interest to academics researching second language acquisition and applied linguistics.
