Body: ANNOUNCEMENT – TOEFL® COE 2009 RESEARCH PROGRAM Preliminary applications described below should be submitted via e-mail to TOEFLRC@ETS.ORG by July 1, 2008. Purpose - TOEFL Committee of Examiners (COE) research grants are intended to support research on topics related to TOEFL as identified by the Committee of Examiners and Educational Testing Service. Some of these topics lend themselves to either research syntheses or empirical investigations. Award Value – Research syntheses will be funded up to $50,000 USD. Studies involving the collection of new empirical data will be funded up to $125,000 USD. These amounts will be inclusive of institutional overhead. Research Topics 1. Test Preparation 2. Test use 3. Validation *Examples of TOEFL iBT items, speaking or writing responses, and scoring rubrics will be provided for use in data collection, as needed. Title: Arabic Summer Academy Job
Body: The Arabic Summer Academy is seeking applications for a position as an Arabic language instructor. We are particularly interested in undergraduate and graduate students of Arabic from the Boston area. Responsibilities include teaching first-year and second-year high school Arabic to students in a five week non-residential summer enrichment program. Instructors will also lead daily co-curricular activities. Instruction will be in Arabic. Requirements include high-level fluency in both Arabic and English, high school or college level experience teaching Arabic, and experience working with high school students in an academic setting. Microsoft Corporation plans to include Nigeria's dominant languages -Yoruba, Hausa and Igbo in the Microsoft Office application suite before year- end. MS Office is a group of applications consisting of Word, a word processing application; Powerpoint, used for presentations; Excel, a spreadsheet application, and Access, an application used for databases. Title: National Language Service Corps Recruitment Begins
Body: The National Language Service Corps (NLSC) is a civilian corps of volunteers with certified expertise in languages important to the security and welfare of the United States. Run by the Department of Defense, the corps is to consist of volunteers willing to serve as on-call Federal employees. The NLSC is an integral component of the Department of Defense Language Transformation Plan and the President's National Security Language Initiative. Recruitment will continue over the next two years. Currently, the languages for which volunteers are sought, are: Mandarin Chinese, Hausa, Somali, Swahili, Hindi, Indonesian, Vietnamese, and Russian.
