Title: Northwest Indian Language Institute
Body: The 11th annual NILI Summer Institute will take place at the University of Oregon, July 7th - 18th, 2008. Courses will cover a range of topics, including Northwest Native languages; linguistics; materials and technology; and teaching methods for Native languages, centered around the theme “From the classroom to the family: Language in the home.” In addition, there will be a weekend workshop July 11-13. This workshop will develop curriculum and materials that connect the classroom with the home. This will include classroom language activities that can be done at home by children with their families. This workshop will also address how to develop a family friendly environment within schools so parents and families feel encouraged to spend time with their children in the classroom, making it a focal point for community. Title: Intensive Summer Language Institutes for Chinese, Arabic and Russian Teachers
Body: The Department of State is pleased to announce Intensive Summer Language Institutes in Chinese, Arabic and Russian for 2008 as part of the National Security Language Initiative. The goal of the program is to strengthen critical need foreign language instruction at U.S. schools by providing intermediate and advanced level Chinese, Arabic and Russian as a Foreign Language teachers with the opportunity for intensive language study. The summer 2008 program is open to current K-12 teachers as well as community college instructors of Chinese (Mandarin), Arabic and Russian. It is also open to students enrolled in education programs intending to teach these languages. Successful applicants will gain further knowledge of the language and a greater understanding of the target culture through the following: attending intensive language classes; collaborating with foreign and American teachers on foreign language teaching methodology; and living abroad. Scholarship Benefits for Selected Participants: International airfare, in-country travel, housing, meals, incidentals, classes, books, pre-departure orientation, educational and cultural excursions. In addition, participants may be eligible for post-scholarship grants as well as academic credit. To be eligible, candidates must: * Speak intermediate or advanced Chinese, Arabic or Russian. Final candidates will be tested prior to entrance in the program, and participants will be tested at the conclusion of the program. * Be current teachers of Chinese, Arabic or Russian as a Foreign Language at the primary or secondary level at an accredited U.S. public or private school, or be enrolled in a 4-year education program (B.A. or B.S.) teacher certification program or a Masters of Education program. Instructors of Chinese, Arabic or Russian at Community Colleges are also encouraged to apply. Candidates must be committed to teaching the language upon their return to the U.S. * Be U.S. citizens Applications will be available in December, 2007 with an anticipated deadline of February 2008. Body: Avant Assessment (formerly Language Learning Solutions) is a leader in Web-based second-language assessment, and is partnered with the Center for Applied Second Language Studies at the University of Oregon. There is an opening for a Test Development Manager. Responsibilities: Manage multiple test-development projects for online tests of foreign language proficiency. Typical work-related activities will include: o Plan, direct and supervise various test-development activities including procurement of foreign language reading texts, passage rating activities, item writing, quality assurance reviews, field testing, item selection, and test form construction. o Supervise key project personnel, including native speakers of target language, passage raters, item writers, editors, and external reviewers. o Conduct training workshops for passage raters and item writers. o Participate in performance evaluation of project team members. o Develop and implement project management schedules and staffing plans as required to achieve project benchmarks. o Provide regular status reports to Director of Test Development. Minimum qualifications: o Academic and/or professional background in educational measurement, second language acquisition, foreign language education. Master's degree a plus. o Bilingual o Professional experience in large-scale test development preferred. o Experience in team leadership and/or project management. o Ability to work with diverse groups on complex projects. o Self-directed and well organized with strong attention to detail. o Ability to prioritize tasks and manage personnel to meet deadlines under pressure. o Intermediate to advanced skills in MSWord and Excel. Willingness and ability to learn new computer programs as needed. o Ability to travel on an occasional basis.
